The reason why they calculate from the last period is because nobody really knows when a woman ovulates or becomes pregnant. This started back before we had the knowledge we have today. I was taught in natural family planning training that ovulation occurs two weeks before the period begins. So if a woman is experiencing a period, she can't get pregnant the day before. Sometimes a woman will have unexplained bleeding that's not a period.
