First, on the 1st/2nd tier issue, the criteria I was considering was the public recognition factor. The truth is if Giles played in Boston he probably would be doing as well for them as Manny, but if Manny had played in Cleveland like he does now, he'd be about 100Mill poorer and still in Cleveland. Guys like that will always have solid to very good seasons, but the reality is that until they have that one season or stretch of gaudy numbers or accomplishments, they'll remain partially in the background. Or more simply put, 55 year old people in North Dakota who DON'T watch baseball know who Alex Rodriguez is, who Mark McGwire is, who Sammy, Griffey, and Barry are, but I doubt they can tell you who Phil Nevin is. It's not right, but it is the way it is.
As for mid's reply, the owners have also been trying to establish a hard minimum that is higher than the one that exists now. I understand your point, but who in their right mind thinks that anyone else deserves another 252 million dollar contract? A-Rod didn't even deserve that, and he is the games best player. But using the logic that that contract in ANY way established the market values for the rest of the league, these are the future SS contact deals: Miguel Tejada(200 mill), David Eckstein(95 mill), Omar Vizquel(75 mill), and so on and so forth. The exact same thing happens with a cap in place, the bar isjust set at about half the current rate( see Nomars deal). An I can't resist one parting shot: the reason I put Tejada at 200 mill is that if Jeter is worth 190 million, Tejada can SURELY get 200....you know, once he gives Oakland the hometown discount.
