As salaamu alaykum,
I want to know if i cannot attend the eid can i put my zakat in a envelope and mail to masjid? Will it count as zakat if i mail the day of eid? I read that the zakat has to be made before the eid prayer is made, or it is just regular charity.
Can i go to the masjid and make my eid prayer, although it is not being made in congregation there, they are making it at the martin luther king center, which is too far for me (imam says i have no excuse i should find a ride)?

Also, I have a question regarding adab. I called my imam regarding the eid, and he was rude to me and hung up without giving salaams, he hung up after i thanked him, also, when i gave salaams, he just said wa alaykum. It has me a little hurt wanting to attend the prayer somewhere else.Am i wrong to be hurt my that? Am i just being too sensitive from that? May allah reward you for all that you do,ameen.

As salamau alaykum,
Sister Naeemah

As Salaamu Alaikoum,

Praise be to Allah.

Your Imam is right. The Eid prayer is Obligatory unless you have a valid excuse. Also, the Prophet(saw) NEVER offered the Eid prayer in a Mosque.. so your Imam again is correct in holding it in a rec center.

The Zakaat al Fitr and its payment:

Zakaat al-Fitr is a kind of charity (sadaqah) that is obligatory at the time of breaking the fast of Ramadaan. The word zakaat is connected by idaafah (genitive structure in Arabic grammar) to fitr because the occasion of breaking the fast is the reason why this zakaat becomes obligatory.

Ibn ‘Abbaas said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) made zakaat al-fitr obligatory as a means of purifying the fasting person from idle talk and foul language, and to feed the poor. Whoever pays it before the prayer, it is an accepted zakaat, and whoever pays it after the prayer, it is just a kind of charity (sadaqah).” (Reported by Abu Dawood, 1371. Al-Nawawi said: Abu Dawood reported it from Ibn ‘Abbaas with a hasan isnaad).

It becomes obligatory when the sun sets on the last day of Ramadaan.

In regards to your imam's rudeness... you must understand the stress that many of our leaders go thru and also accept that they are humans and capable of mistakes. Perhaps he meant no harm. The Prophet(saw) says we should lower our wing to the other Muslims and give a Muslim the benefit of doubt.

I do not see your imam leading you away from the Quran or sunnah so i think it would not be right for you to try to use this as an excuse to not follow him. Just lower your wing and realize that we all are stressed and sometimes make mistakes.

AND ALLAH KNOWS BEST
