How can I learn more about Islam (fundamental beliefs, lifestyle, rules, etc...)? Should I read the Quran? Keep in mind that I am American and may not understand some of the translations. Are there other books you might recommend that would be easier for me to read and understand?

Thanks.

Thank you for your replies. Please take my questions as being totally sincere, and I apologize if any sound sarcastic or argumentative. I'm actually asking these same questions to a christian guy on the internet. As I said before, I'm a little confused and am trying to explore all areas.
Here is today's question:
Why does Allah even care if we believe in Him? Why does it matter? He loves us, and He made us, so wouldn't He want to save us all? I know that my parents, even though I do terrible things sometimes, love me and would do anything for me. Aren't we Allah's children? Why doesn't he take us all into heaven?

Thanks

Assalamualaikum Sister Laila
The other day, I went to listen to a speech that was made by a shaykh on the topic of Riba.
He used an example of the action that Bilal did. One day, Bilal brought a bucket of fresh dates to Prophet muhammad(PBUH)and said that he exchanged it with two buckets of not very fresh dates. On hearing it, Prophet muhammad (PBUH) said to Bilal "This is Riba"
On the similar occasion, Prophet (PBUH) allowed his followers to exchange a camel with 4 baby camels.
The shaykh explained the reason of this difference is that dates were used as money at that time.
I thought of the reason is focused on the possibility of the benefit that you get from the object you exchanged. But then, are 4 baby camels equal to an adult camel ????
Please kindly explain this. Jazakallah kahir

It puzzles me that Allah Subhan wa Ta'ala would permit His revealed Books to be distorted by men, thereby allowing millions of His creatures to be deceived through the centuries and go to hell-fire until all was corrected in the Qur'an. The Tawrat, Zaboor, Kutub al Anbiya and Injeel are all in agreement and are the most highly authenticated of all ancient literature. Of all the revealed Books only the Qur'an is in disagreement on basic issues. Must Muslims close their eyes to these realities? Practicing Christians tell me that their lives have been transformed,
drug addicts have become humble worshippers and have the guarantee of eternal life with all their sins completely forgiven because Isa (pbuh) willingly died on the cross to pay the penalty for their sins and rose again on the third day. Is it enough for Muslims to simply say that the previous Books are distorted because the Qur'an contradicts them? This is very confusing to me. I would be grateful if one of the respected ulema on this site would respond to me.

Thank you for your last response (Re: Question about Islamic beliefs). I have another question. I'm curious as to how one lives a muslim life. It seems that it would be impossible for any human to do. With so many temptations that exist in the world today, how do you avoid them? If you see a man/woman that is very attractive, it is natural to have lustful thoughts, isn't it? How do you avoid this?

Also, what if I want to buy a candy bar. I don't really need the candy bar, I can live without it, and the 50 cents could probably feed a kid in Africa for a day. So is it a sin for me to eat a candy bar?

What if I want to watch a movie. The movie may contain violence and sexual content. Does the Quran teach against violence and sexual content? So is it a sin to watch a movie?

My point is that lots of the stuff we do everyday seems sinful and unavoidable. If I convert to Islam, do I have to stop eating candy bars and watching movies?

Thanks.

I have asthma, and I have to take inhalers 2 times a day. I wanted to know if I can still fast, and that my fast would be accepted if I take my inhalers throughout the day while I’m fasting. I know that people who have health issues that require them to take medication are not required to fast, however, I feel healthy enough on most days to go ahead and fast, as long as I take my inhalers. I would appreciate it if you could clarify this for me.

I'm trying to explore other areas because I don't agree with everything that the Bible teaches. I have a question concerning what Muslims believe. Do all non-Muslims go to hell?

Also, I'm curious as to how one lives a Muslim life. Are there rules on what to wear, eat, pray, etc...?

My Mom, unfortunately, prohibits me from wearing Hijab. I am 19 years old and finally realized Hijab's importance in a Muslim woman's life and its consequences and when I told her that I will wear Hijab because it is prescribed by Allah, she says that in our country, the USA, it will prevent me from getting jobs and ultimately ruin my entire career for I will not get a good-paying job due to discrimination of Muslims. She adds that she will burn my scarves and things if I begin wearing it regardless of what she says. Therefore, I am not currently wearing it. I ask Allah for forgiveness everyday, since I have realized to wear Hijab, for not wearing it. I know that I cannot have the acutal scarf over my head, but I do now make sure to wear long sleeves, dress in loose-fitting clothes, and tie up my hair in a simple bun (all the things that consist of a proper hijab EXCEPT the actual scarf). I will continue to do so until my Mom lets me wear the complete Hijab. I don't know when or IF that day wille ever come, but I pray to Allah to give my Mom guidance so that she may understand.

Please tell me if my actions are fully exhausting my current options pertaining to hijab. Also, am I doing the right thing? It's difficult to listen to the word of Allah when my Mom is in the way. And I know that Islam also tells us to listen to our parents and respect what they tell us. I pray that Allah forgives her for her actions, I know that in her eyes, what she is saying is for my own "good" when it is really not. Kind Brother or Sister, your response is greatly appreciated.

Jazak Allahu Khayrun.

Assalamualaikum, sister. Thank you for answering my question on "Cutting women's hair" May Allah reward you for helping us to learn Islam.
After reading your reply, there is still a question about Hadiths. ( I did try to join the Quranic Chat, but I cannot somehow) I am still confused about which scholar I should listen to... The scholar that I talked to was famous and showed me a lot of hadiths which turned out to be NOT authentic resources according to you. At the time the hadiths was given to me, it seemed apparent. How can I distinguish whether the hadiths that a scholar gives me is authentic or not ? I have recently reverted to Islam, and I was given some false information from "Imam" and "scholar" so far...I have a few muslim friends who are also learning and we both dont always have answers. What would be the most effective way for us to learn the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad s.w.t ? I read some books on his life, but still need some help. Jazakallah Kahir Walaikumsalam

Asalam Aleikum,

My first question is what does "rab igfirlee wa irhamnee" mean and are we supposed to say it during Salat and when exactly?

My second question is when during Salat are we supposed to say the Thanaa' ("Subhaanakalla humma...ghai ruka.") and please explain it in detail (i.e. where should i place my hands, am i standing/sitting).

My third question is please explain to me about when in Salat to make Dua'a. If in between, then exactly when? If possible, please support your answer with any ahadeeth or other source.

My fourth question is really hard for me to explain, but I will do me best. For example, during Zuhr Salat, we have mandatory 4 rakaats Farz, in addition to other Sunnat and Nafil rakaats that aren't mandatory. When I go to pray my 4 Rakaats (for any Salat) is it divided up into two sets of two Rakaats? Or are all the four rakaats said in simply four Rakaats? Also, is the Durood only recited ONCE (at the final rakaat after reciting Thashahud) if I was doing, for example, 2 Rakaats Nafil for Zuhr Salaat? Or is the Durrod always recited in after the Thashahud? If you answered that YES DUA'A IS SAID WHILE WE ARE PERFORMING SALAT, then would we recite the "Dua'a After the Durood" ("Allahuma inee zalam tu nafsee zulman...ghafoo rur raheem.") immediately after Durood?

My fifth question is if a prayer rug (I forget the proper name for it) is absolutely necessary to perform Salat? What alternatives are there because I have no way of getting a prayer rug at the moment. Meanwhile, and may Allah forgive me if I am wrong, I use a large towel (which is clean and not used like a normal towel but for my Salat only).

My sixth question is that was it okay for me to get my Salat Time Table offline? It is for the entire month from IslamiCity.com. Are online Salat timings accurate? If they are not, is my Salat still counting? Am I to be performing Salat EXACTLY, for example for Mahgrib Salat, when the clock strikes 5:29pm tonight? Or is 5:29pm the time I should begin my wudu?

My seventh question is that is it okay for me to recite Surah Ikhlas during every Rakaat after reciting Surah Fatiha because I haven't memorized that many Surahs yet? Is it makrough?

My eight question is how many times are we supposed to say "Subhana rabiyal azeem" and "Subhana rabiyal alla" while in Rukoo and Sajdah, respectively? Is it Sunnah to say it more than the minimum number of times?

My ninth question is regarding mistakes. For example, I must be honest with you that during Salat (when trying to do 4 Rakats) I forget if this is the Rakat that I am supposed to stay seated after Sajdah and recite Tashahud or if I am to get up and begin a new Rakaat. In other words, I forget which Rakat number I am in. Particularly, this happens during Zuhr and Isha Salats. What should I do when I find myself in such a situation?

My tenth question is regarding the two Salats (correct me if I'm wrong) that are offered BEFORE Fajr and after Isha. I know the one after Isha is called Witr Salat. I don't know the name of the Salat before Fajr, however. Is performing these two Salats Sunnah or mandatory? What is their significance? Please tell me of a website, if possible, that will give me ample detail as to how to perform these two salats (i.e. how many Rakats, body position, intention, their timings, etc.).

My eleventh question is why is it that women (as I have noticed in Jummah Salat while praying in congregation at Masjid) do the Salam (as Salat ends) AFTER the Imaam says the Salam and looks to his right. Is this an innovation or traditional?

I have been informed of the following through a hadith I read, but please correct me when I am wrong. When one prays at home they are to place an object (there was a particular name for that object but I do not recall it) before their prayer rugs so that no one will walk in front of them. If someone walks in front of them, then the person praying person is to stop that other person by force to not cross them praying because Shaytan is forcing them to walk in front of a praying person. If this is correct, is the person, in the middle of Salat, supposed to put Salat on hold (or break it?) and then go to stop the person from crossing them? What if the person who crosses in front of you while praying does so but is about two or three feet away and not directly in front of you? Does one's Salat automatically break if someone crosses in front of them? What is one to do when their house is small and crowded and performing Salat anywhere will result in someone walking in front of them, not deliberately of course.

My thirteenth question is regarding facing the proper direction during Salat. I use the freeways to figure out which direction is which because I do not have a compass and there is no one I can ask. For example, near our house there is the 110 freeway north and south and from that I can tell where east is. I know that I must be at least a little wrong in this calculation if not entirely wrong. Please tell me a natural way (such as the spot where the Sun is at a certain time of day) that you know of so one can figure out which way is EXACTLY east.

Forgive me for so many questions but do know that your answers are GREATLY appreciated by me and highly important to me. And may Allah reward you accordingly.

Jazak Allahu Khayrun.

Asalama Aleikum,

My question is if a person should recite "Aoozo billahi minash shaytan nirajeem" and "Bismillahir rahman niraheem" before reading every verse from the Qur'an. I am aware that one must recite it before reading the Qur'an when it is in front of them and they plan to read for a while. But is one supposed to say Aoozo-Bismillah when reading articles or forums (such as yours) which quote one, two, or more verses from the Qur'an when emphasis or support is needed on a particular issue? Is there anything one says after reading verses from the Qur'an in articles or forums? Is it correct to say "Sada qallhul azeem" after finishing reading from the Qur'an after a lengthy time? Lastly, what does "Sadaq allhul azeem" mean?

the second is, in my family and a lot of the people i know, when sombody dies, there is a soyam held for them, meaning people read quran and thasbee and pray etc for that person...... but then i have read before that u have told people that this does not exist in the sunnah.....and then i was reading your answer to somebodys question and you were saying how it is good to go to somebodys funeral and you get a certain number of sawaab and you pray for them....

so is it or is it not allowed for you to read quran etc at somebodys death? do u get punished for it if you do?
thank you

Salam-Aleikum, all,

A question has been bothering me a lot, since I started contemplating over the verses of the Nobe Qur'an. Allah says:

....ma kana Muhammadin aba ahadin min rijalikum wa lakin rasulallahi wa khataman nabiyyeen...

....verily, Muhammad is not the father of any one of you, however, he is a messenger and the seal of the prophets....

Considering that a messenger is also a nabi, but a nabi may not be a messenger and also, the expression "khataman-nabiyyeen" (the seal of the prophets), does it mean that a new messenger (not prophet, because our prophet was the seal of all prophets) may, naudhubillah, come, since Allah does not use "khatamar-rusool"?

Awaiting your responce,

As-salamu aleikum, all,

How do muslim scholars substantiate the prophet's marriage with Aisha, taking into consideration that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was around 50 when he married Aisha, who was 9? Some say there were no intimite relations between the prophet and Aisha, the marriage was mainly political. Is it true?

Besides, how could the prophet marry more than four women at a time, when the Qur'an tells to marry up to four women?

I also purchased hadiths "Riyad-us-Saliheen" But I need some explanations from Scholars also. Who should I be talking to in order to understand the real meanings of topics in Hadiths ? Should I refer more strict view of scholars ? For example, not watching TV at all for any reason ( one scholar told me) or allowed to watch some news on TV? jazakallah

Assalamualaikum
I reverted to Islam a month ago. I made my shahada here in overseas as I am away from my parents for 5 years for my university. I have told my mother about my conversion, and she did not disagree. However, she actually does not know what Islam is. ( I am from Japan, and there are not many muslims there)
After the conversion, I finally made up my mind to marry this muslim man that I have known for a while here. Then I talk to my mother about it, then she got furious. She thinks that I should be fininshing my study first and marry after the graduation. However, I wanted to marry as soon as possible as I do not want to commit a great sin anymore by contacting this man. I truly got married only for fearing Allah.
My mother said if I marry now she will not send any money for tuition fee. She said she doesnt mind that I marry the man but not now. I really cannot afford to pay for it. So I lied to her that I will not marry now. I sometimes feel sad for the fact that I lied to my mother and she doesn't know that I am married(had nikah). I did'nt register the marriage in Japan and here in overseas.
Have I done a right thing ? We are very careful not to have a child until I insyallah graduate in the end of the year.

As salaam alaikoem, (a) I listend to the tape 'the moslim home, part 3'. The doea after prayer with hands up, is an inovation. Does that mean that i should stop making that kind of doea with all the others after the fridayprayer, or is the fridayprayer special in this case? Is this innovation haram? (b) You have to excuse me, but then i do not understand something. First you telling in the tape during the sudjoed, that this is the time for making doea, later then on the tape you give 2 excemples of doea that Mohammed (saws) used and then you tell, he (saws) did these between the 2 sadjdas (14:50), so now i'm a little confused. Normally in my prayers i make personal doea in soedjoed when head is on the ground and between them i say 'Rabbigfirly' 3 times. Is this correctly? I hope you can understand me, i do not have the possibility to hear your live lectures, because of no computer at home, so can't i ask you on that moment the questions, but i want to learn the right way of everything about Islam. Asalama Aleikum WRB Brothers and Sisters,

My friend, the Manager of an informative Islamic site, informed me of this site. Firstly, I would like to thank all of you who help make such a site as this possible. May Allah (swt) reward all of you.

Recently, by the Grace of Allah (swt) my long-time immigration problem has been given some positive action. One can say about step 1 out of 3 have been taken. I am more than grateful for what has been done and InshaAllah what will be done in the future. What I wanted to know was that because of such a blessed occurance in me and my family's life I wish to thank Allah (swt) or offer something extra. I am afraid I am not wording this correctly, but I hope that you do understand what my motive is here. So dear brothers and sisters, please enlighten me on what I and my family can do. So far, I have been informed of performing extra Nafil prayers in my Salaah. I get this confused with the Nafil salaahs that are already for each namaaz, that is if we choose to do them or not. In any case, whatever advice you have to offer will be greatly appreciated.

JazakAllah Khair.

Does husband allow to bathe the body of the dead wife? does commemorating someone's death (1st, 2nd, 3rd ,7th, 40th day) is considered bid'ah? how about putting cotton in throat, nostrils and building structures or placing gravestones to indicate the name are also bid'ah?

(2) Can a man say to her that she is beautiful, when a walli is with them, by asking her to marrige? (3) When a man or woman commits adultery, the punishe is dead, does that mean, that every good deed they do after never will be accepted, and that they whatever they do, go to hell, or should forgive Allah them when they stop doing the sine for ever, and ask forgiveness? I want to know as a muslimah, what do i do in this type of situation? I was backbitten, and slandered, and it was brought to me from a sister i know, and the statement was made by another sister. i was hurt, because it was said in a bad way. the sister said, "what sister "a" said about you is right, you are (blank)". the statement is false, i did nothing wrong, but i feel funny hanging, and talking with these two sisters knowing they where talking about me behind my back, with no basis. do i just forgive and forget, do i confront, or what? i do not want to go against islam in any way within this situation, which is petty but hurt me, or any other situation, insha allah, allahu alim.

Assalammualaikum,

I would like to enquire on the following hadith below, does this means that the dhikr that they were doing aloud were in congregation??

-Shahril

=====================================================
From Sahih Bukhari
Volume 1, Book 12, Number 802:
Narrated Abu Ma'bad:

(the freed slave of Ibn 'Abbas) Ibn 'Abbas told me, "In the lifetime of the Prophet it was the custom to celebrate Allah's praises aloud after the compulsory congregational prayers." Ibn 'Abbas further said, "When I heard the Dhikr, I would learn that the compulsory congregational prayer had ended."

From Sahih Bukhari
Volume 1, Book 12, Number 803:
Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:

I used to recognize the completion of the prayer of the Prophet by hearing Takbir.

As-Salaamu 'Alaikum wa RaHmatullaah

I have specific questions in regards to women's rights in marriage. Does a wife have the right to have time spent with her alone with her spouce? What if the husband does not want to spend time with her but only wants to spend time with the baby? Please give me examples from the Quran and the Sunnah.

Is eating together as a family part of spending time as a family? What if he eats whenever he wants to eat (was not like this at the begining of marriage) and does not eat breakfast, lunch and dinner with family most of the time because he does not feel hungry at the time and just gets a bite from the refrig and leaves for whatever reason? What is a typical life for a husband and wife as far as their life together. This husband feels that there should not be a routine to eat at certain times, and does not feel that spending time together is important because he feels that I have reponsiblities around the house and he has his life and that's the way it should be. I think otherwise, is this wrong for me do demand time spent and eating meals together as a family too much? Mind you I've tried talking to him but it ends up in an arguement. I've tried speaking to him about seeing an Imam but he does not want to. Please give me daleel from Quran and sunnah

We so often hear that the previous Books have been corrupted and cannot be relied upon. However, in Surah 5:46 we read that "in their footsteps We sent Isa the son of Maryam confirming the Torah that had come before him. We sent him the Gospel: therein was guidance and light." Then in 5:48 we read "We sent the Scripture in truth confirming the scripture that came before it and guarding it in safety." Is Almighty God not well able to preserve His Word from corruption on which the salvation of humanity depends?

Some of my Christian friends have told me that they have the complete assurance of eternal salvation because Isa (puh) has offered a sufficient sacrifice for sins by willingly dying on a cross and rising from the dead. They tell me they have a bright future and are full of joy that life's difficulties cannot touch. However, my imam tells me that no matter how hard we try to accumulate points through salat, zakat, hajj, takwa etc. there can be no guarantee of escaping hell fire and that it is wrong to expect to be joyful in Islam. Can you give me some guidance in this matter that proves the superiority of Islam?

Sala aleikum

I heard the best way to remember Allah is dikr. I usually say , Alhamdulilahi, subhanAllah, Allahu Akbar, La Ilaaha ilaalahu, subhanAllah wa bihamdihi 33 times. I feel sometimes that it is not enough ,and my question is, are there more dikhr word or phrases than those ?

As salaam alaikoem, i've got a questions about using bathroom. Why did Profhet (saws) cover his head when he uses toilet, and is this fard or soenna? I listend to tape of washing private parts. Is there a difference between ablution and woedoe?
I heard de Shayck about passing wind does not require ablution, does that means if passing wind woedoe is not nessecery for salat?

I want to know am I still married to my kafar wife.I was married to a woman who was a christian.on 1/1/03 I pronouced 1 talaq on her to divorce her.Someone told me that I am still married to her because I havent said it three times. Is this correct? I have no intention of getting back with her as she refuses to accept Islam and any children that would have come from this married would have been confused as to which religion he/she should follow.
I'd like the correct position on this.

The term Halala is used to describe the divorce situation I mentioned in my previous enquiry. It is probably used only in Urdu language that is why you did not understand it. I am sorry I did not know it was not Arabic term. I am asking about the solution to the problem I mentioned in the first place that what is the ruling for making ruju in a divorce when the man divorces his fiance when he is forced to do so by someone else and not out of his own will and the divorce occurs before the marriage is consummated. The woman is still waiting for him after more than 12 years have passed to that event and she will not mary someone else other than her fiance who said he was forced to sign the divorce. I will appreciate if two or more scholars can answer this. Jazakallah khair Kathir

As salaamu alaykum,
I am considering taking a third shift job, and was wondering in which way do I handle my prayers? I had one befoe I reverted, and slept usually very late, until before maghrib time. So, would i just make up the missed prayers upon rising, or wake up for the prayers, and go back to sleep until i have to get up for the day, insha allah? I've read that sleep is a valid excuse for missing a prayer, but I don't think that it is applicable in this situation, allahu alim. jazakallah khair

Asalama Aleikum

I have two questions regarding salah i would be very greatful if you could answer them for me

1) During witr prayers when perfoming the third rakah do u have to make a supplication after you do salam, if so what supplication must you make

2)I have read a hadith about performing sujood al sow for forgetfulness in salah, but did not fully understand it, if i forget how many rakahs i have preformed but i know for certain that i have performed three and i can't remember whether i performed the fourth or not, do i perform the fourth again or stick to the three and just perform the sajda for forgetfulness before tasleem

Jazakallah

Doing goods deeds with the intention that hopefully you don't get punished and/or go to the hell fire.

What is Halala? A man was forced by his relatives to divorce a women they did not like for him before the marriage was completed. The man did not initiate the divorce. The relatives wrote a divorce petition and made him sign it. Only nikah was performed, but actual marriage did not happen. The couple did not meet each other. Now the man wants to marry this woman. Is it possible to do without halala? Please give your scholarly advice.
