Assalamulaikum.

I work at a Muslim owned convenient store. We sell many items and liquor is one of them. The job market where I live in America is very week and it is hard to find work at places that do not sell alcohol. Moreover, jobs I've had in the past have been low-paying and stressful. In past jobs I have been severely mistreated and too mentally and physically worn at the end of the day to study and practice Islam.

At my new job I work for a Muslim owner. I am treated very well. The business supports his whole family. All the money the business makes is given to his poor family members and to charity. He has many family members that depend on the income from the business. Without it they would be in poverty. If he took the alcohol out of the store he would go out of business. Plain and simple.

Can I work there for a few more years till I finish my degree?

As Salaamu Alaikoum,

Praise be to Allah.

Allah says, the interpretation of the meaning,

“O you who believe! Intoxicants (all kinds of alcoholic drinks), and gambling, and Al‑Ansaab (stone altars for sacrifices to idols etc), and Al‑Azlaam (arrows for seeking luck or decision) are an abomination of Shaytaan’s (Satan’s) handiwork. So avoid (strictly all) that (abomination) in order that you may be successful” [al-Maa'idah 5:90-91]

Based on this, it is not permissible to sell alcohol for by doing so you are cooperating in sin and transgression, and Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Help you one another in Al‑Birr and At‑Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression” [al-Maa’idah 5:2]

So you have to give up this work immediately. The believer should realize that whoever gives up something for the sake of Allaah, Allaah will compensate him with something better than that. If a person puts his trust in his Lord, He will grant him the means of provision, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And whosoever fears Allaah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty).

And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine. And whosoever puts his trust in Allaah, then He will suffice him. Verily, Allaah will accomplish his purpose. Indeed Allaah has set a measure for all things”
[al-Talaaq 65:2-3]

And this is pure and simple and from Allah.

There are many other jobs that one can work that do not involve the selling of alcohol. Look for them

AND ALLAH KNOWS BEST
