assalam alaikum wa rahmit Allahi wa barakatu

i have a question concerning ayat 79:46.

"The Day they see it, (it will be) as if they had tarried but a single evening, or (at most till) the following morn!"

the tafseer of Yusuf Ali refers to how Death( time spent in the grave) will only feel like a single evening or at most till the following morn.

this ayat made me ponder. because i remeber reading in sahih al bukhari that Prophet Muhomme(sas) was walking by a graveyard and he put a stick or something that had moisture in it and asked Allah to with hold the punishments of the grave this person was receiving because he use to soak his clothing with his urine.

regarding to the ayat, now does this brief event of death(grave occupation) that is going to happen to all of us, is it going to be brief for only the pious or for everybody, pious and sinners, .etc.

assalam alaikum wa rahmit Allahi wa barakatu

As Saalamu Alaikoum,

Praise be to ALLAH.

This ayat of Quran is not saying that death will be short for us. What it is saying is that we have NO sense of time in the hereafter. One day for us in this world could be equal to a thousand years in the hereafter. This Ayat tells us that we want for more time.

In regards to the Hadith you are thinking of, that hadith talks about how the prophet(saw) passed by a graveyard and heard the cries of 2 people being tormented. One for making salat with urine in his clothes. The prophet(saw) put a date palm leaf over their graves to lessen their pain:

Narrated Ibn Abbas
Once the Prophet, while passing through one of the graveyards of Medina or Mecca heard the voices of two
persons who were being tortured in their graves. The Prophet said, "These two persons are being tortured not for a major sin (to avoid)." The Prophet then added, "Yes! (they are being tortured for a major sin). Indeed, one of them never saved himself from being soiled with his urine while the other used to go about with calumnies (to make enmity between friends). The Prophet then asked for a green leaf of a date-palm tree, broke it into two pieces and put one on each grave. On being asked why he had done so, he replied, "I hope that their torture might be lessened, till these get dried." [Bukhari 1.215]

This hadith has nothing to do with time. It simply warns us against not keeping ourselves clean and causing fitnah between others...

AND ALLAH KNOWS BEST
