Subject: He said they had "their hands on their guns"

That is not "guns drawn." If I place my hand on a holstered weapon, it is only because I do not what to expect. If I draw my weapon I believe there will be trouble. Of course to me there is a major difference. I would not have my hand away from my weapon when asking an unknown individual to exit their vehicle. This is because there is no way for me to control the situation until the person is out. There are just too many possibilities to take the chance.

And this is not "gun point." It is making sure people take it seriously, and know they will be in trouble if they do not comply. (Vehicle stops are the most dangerous thing officers do)

As to random checks: There are resources to conduct searches that should be used. If no one presents a reason to search, it is still a good idea to search people. It is too easy for a person wanting to slip by to know how to act.

Using these resources to conduct these searches is appropriate if they are not being used elsewhere. A random search should not take precedence over one with cause (f course this presents a problem for people wotking as teams to slip by).

I would also say that the people trying to provide security have always cared. The change is in the attitude of those being searched. Prior to Sept 11th, it was a hassle and they complained. Now it is a hassle, and they don't (as much unless they feel singled out).

I think this is the case with this person. One half hour is not an excessive search, or one that assumes anything specific. So I think he is overreacting, and being oversensative. I would probably have acted the same way.

Do you hear airline personnel complaining about their added problems?
