I'm kind of reminded of people who are forever on about how little they care what others think of them. Ever noticed that those people who truly don't seem to actually say as much rather seldom, if at all? I've found more that people who keep saying 'I'm so strange, and I don't care what anyone makes of it!' (whether literally or effectively) actually do care about the opinions of others, but are hoping to deflect those opinions by claiming not to give a crap.

Here's a comparison for you, and it's a bit of a strange one. Think of Ayanami Rei from Neon Genesis Evangelion. Her personality, her manner, and the way other reacted to her...that's the sort of thing many an aspiring young goth would, well, aspire to. And such a goth (just so no-one gets no funny ideas, this is 'goth' as in 'pale face and black make-up' rather than 'ancient Germany and bearskin jackets') may well go right out of their way to modulate a bizarre calm and quite voice, remember to move in a very minimal manner, and generally try to 'quiet and spooky' the heck out of everyone. See the difference here? The latter person has to work at it and possibly won't acheive what they want, whereas with Rei, that's simply who and how she is. They're fishing for a reaction, she's simply doing what she does and happens to be getting said reaction.

Like I said, it's a bizarre comparison, but maybe it works. The bloke in the above date story, he obviously thought being 'strange' and 'nutty' was dead cool and in and bound to impress someone, and so pulled out all the stops to make that part of how he presented himself. And, of course, he made a pig's ear of it. If, on the other hand (and I'll keep in mind I'm hearing this story a few tellings down, so I don't really know what was going down), he had simply been himself, and happened to be somewhat atypical from the norm, as opposed to thinking of the most 'bizarre' thing to say then proclaiming that that was why he said it, well, things may have gone more smoothly. She might have found him refreshing and interesting as opposed to nauseating and dumb.

I think there's some whole kind of 'be yourself' message in here, but I'll stop now.
(Because in my head I'm getting a horrible amount of logic slipping into an originally-joking comparison of the EBs to the X-Men.)
