As I recall, the original intended itinerary for that particular cruise was Malta - Gythion (southern Greece) - Alexandria (very long bus ride to Cairo and the pyramids) - Rhodes - Antalya (southern Turkey) - Skiathos (Greek island) - Venice. Obviously the grounding in Alexandria harbour put paid to most of the trip and the ship limped to Athens, where (from my experience) we went on a few trips out to various Greek sites (including the Acropolis). The reason I remember the itinerary? The amount of flipping school work I had to do before the trip, researching everywhere we were going to visit. I spent god knows how many hours in our school library, thumbing through our copy of the Encyclopedia Britannica. All that work was forgotten about after the Alexandria incident. Aaaghh!!! I was a spotty little 13yr old then and didn't really appreciate foreign travel (that was my first flight/trip abroad!) and certainly had barely noticed that there were actual girls on the same boat. I blame that on going to an all boys grammar school (Calday Grange on Wirral). I think I've grown up (a little) since then.
