UPDATE !!! - SS Uganda - Educational Cruise - May 1980 - UPDATE !!!

First off - Remember The "Tuck Shop" ?

My Original Post is Here : http://www.voy.com/71354/436.html

So After doing a bit of research from various places along with matching locations
with the photos i took I've been able to piece together a bit more detail about my cruise
aboard the Uganda in May 1980. I Should have filled in my "Young Mariner's Cruise Journal".

Hope this update it's of interest ...

The Cruise Number was - 079
The Mungo Park Dorm was on the Port Side ( left ) behind the Funnel down on 'B' Deck
Wish i could remember my Bunk Number ( Mungo Park had 28 Berths ).

Below is a 'slighty' more detailed list of the Countries & Ports Of Call visited including Dates.
( Although a few gaps are still missing - I just can't find the info ).
Along with some of the places visited & some memories of that time marked with a * in brackets.

As well as the list below I also recall :-
Mr Skipp - Our Party Leader / Teacher.
Lots of Laughs onboard Uganda ( Common Room, On Deck, Dorm etc. ) and ashore on outings.
Sadly though we had to wear school uniform on outings - We weren't happy about that at all !
We were let loose in a Souk & or Bazaar, not sure where though ( maybe Turkey ).
A few Museums were visited, again can't recall where ( one maybe in Athens ).
Bartering - Don't you just miss being able to have a good old Haggle ?
Buying Bottles of Coke from street vendors & wondering if we were going to get "The Trots" ( I didn't ! ).

Greece ( 14th May - 1980 )
Port = Athens ( Piraeus ) ( * Very Busy, Lots of Mercedes Cars & Hot, Very Hot ! ).
Mouseion Hill - Philopappos Monument. ( * My First good view of the Acropolis ).
The Acropolis ( * My First good view of the Mouseion Hill ).
The Parthenon, Old Temple of Athena etc. on the Acropolis ( * Steep Path up but Worth it ! ).

Greece ( 15th May )
Port = Volos ( * A Crazy Coach Drive in the hills to visit Monasteries ).
I think it was the Meteora Monasteries in Thessaly ( * Was an Amazing Place ! ).

Turkey ( 16th May )
Port = Izmir
Ephesus ( * The Celsus Library was impressive - but The Grand Amphitheatre = Wow ! ).
House of the Virgin Mary on Mount Koressos ( * Small ).

Sicily ( 19th May )
Port = Syracuse ( Siracusa )
( * The Coach Drivers Cigarettes ! - Everyone else went to see piles of bones somewhere ).
The Cathedral of Syracuse ( The Greek Temple of Athena ).

Tunisia ( 20th May )
Port = I recall Tunis but the Lloyds Voyage Records say that Bizerta was the port of call, so not 100% sure.
Still visited the Cathedral Of Saint Louis on Byrsa Hill at Carthage.
Sidi Bou Said ( * Everywhere - White & Blue Buildings & The No 1 Place to Haggle ).

Gibraltar ( 23rd May )
Port = Gibraltar ( * Horses with Carriages & Monkeys ).

Portugal ( 24th May )
Port = Lisbon ( * Locals wanting to buy my camera - A Kodak Instant Camera ).
Monument to the Discoveries ( * Big Harbour Side ... um, Monument & More Camera related hassle ).
Christo Rei - Christ Statue ( * Nearly fell off a cliff taking the photo ).

The Bay Of Biscay ( * ROUGH - Wasn't Sea Sick ! ).

Southhampton ( 27th May ) ( * The End - Of what was a Great Adventure ! ).

A Tad Brief - But I Hope you enjoyed this update.
