 Ran across this site and your message while helping my daughter with research on my Father's WWII service. And, I'm learning a great deal in the process. Your original post was in 2003 and it's now 2005. My Father is alive, living in Maryland and has many recollections of his service. His name is Edgar Doneski and he served from 1944 through 1947. I believe he was also present for the surrender. When he left the Botetourt, I believe he was a Gunner's Mate 3rd Class. I'll ask him if he has recollections of your Dad.
