Just like to say how disappointing it was on Saturday. i believe that we were lucky to get a bonus point BUT it could have been so different. what was Gillick playing at in the first half?? 4 on 1 overlap and he could'nt pass the ball . Sorrow but that was unbelieveable. Would'nt he or could'nt he? Which is it.
Over the last few weeks people have asked me about Rob Thirlby coaching the backs next year! Has anybody else heard this? Could we get this confirmed or denied please. I always assumed he was on a one year contract and that it was'nt going to be renewed at season's end(been a very big disappointment). Interesting rumour though.

Hugely disappointing performance and result despite the undeserved (IMHO) bonus point. There were rare opportunities for tries and Bedford took theirs.

What I cannot understand is the lack of ambition in the play - to get into the Bedford 22 only once in he second half playing down the slope was shocking.

Tackling was generally good but Bedford were the better side and deservedly won.

I understand that London Welsh hit the post with a conversion which means that Plymouth had an extra point to their total (although they might have had 4 points. I'm fairly sure that 42 points is not quite enough.

Come on Mose!

Burns on fire for England Under-20s against Wales
5 February 2010, 10:15 pm

By Nick Webster, Sportsbeat

Two tries from Harlequins prop Joe Marler helped England Under-20s overturn a halftime deficit and record a resounding 41-14 victory over Wales.Cardiff Blues winger James Loxton scored the only try of the first half to give Wales an 8-6 advantage at Kingsholm but after the break it was one-way traffic.

Marler (2) along with hooker Jamie George, Jacob Rowan and Jonny May all crossed with Gloucester starlet Freddie Burns pulling the strings on his home turf.
However England would play the last 16 minutes with 14 men after back-rower Alex Gray's red card for illegal use of the boot - that though did not stop them grabbing two tries.

Yet it was Wales though who seized the early initiative thanks from Matthew Jarvis’ penalty after a mistake by debutant full-back Tom Catterick.

But Jarvis missed two further kicks and Burns levelled the scores with a penalty of his own.

Wales then produced the moment of the half, winning clean line out ball which initiated a free-flowing move through the back line.

Catterick was outpaced by Dan Fish who played in James Loxton, shifting through the gears to finish in the corner.

But following a midfield burst by Will Hurrell that forced a mistake out of Wales, Burns kicked England to within two points at the break.

England coach Mark Mapletoft’s half-time orders did the trick as they came out firing on all cylinders.

Another midfield break by Burns clawed back valuable possession and the resulting dominant England scrum produced an opportunity for the fly-half to offload to a rampaging Marler.

Wales couldn’t stop the powerful Quins man as his 20-metre burst was too strong for Scott Williams and Kristian Phillips, whose tackles were in vain as Marler finished under the posts to give England a 13-8 lead.

Jarvis held his nerve to kick a long penalty from wide on the touchline to pull Wales back to within two points but their success was short-lived.

A sweeping England move started by Burns, who was beginning to enjoy himself, allowed hooker Jamie George to power over the line in the corner and extend England’s lead once more.

England were turning the screw with an impressive forward move from inside their own half that was started by Burns who offloaded well in the tackle to Callum Green.

Green passed inside to George who released Rowan who split the Welsh defences and finished comfortably under the posts, leaving Homer with an easy conversion to make it 27 -14.

England’s forwards were as dominant in the loose as they were at set plays and the excellent George started the forwards move that allowed Marler to cross under the posts again for his second.

The rout was complete when replacement May stepped into the line and was played in by Jonathan Joseph.

The Gloucester boy delighted the Kingsholm crowd evading tackles from James Thomas and Phillips with Homer completing the conversion.

Thought for the day - wouldn't we be better off in the bottom four? Surely we'd get far better gates for huge relegation playoffs against Bees and Cov than against most of the top 8.

I know the glass half empty crowd will say we'd lose, but we've always been better at big games.

Birmingham & Solihull Rugby Club has formally requested the use of Billesley Common on Wednesday February 17th with a kick off at 7.30 pm to play the postponed RFU Championship fixture against Doncaster. Moseley Rugby Club is pleased to assist its neighbour again and accommodate this request.

Apart from the on field result, we are advised that the Bees and their supporters enjoyed the use of our facilities for the Nottingham match and we hope they will find them equally as accommodating for the Doncaster one.

Enjoyment of the onfield activities however is outwith our control and is of course dependent upon the performances of the competing teams.

Absolutely no where near the same bees squad that played us the other week.

On a happy note, Luke Pearce, our (favourite) referee from our game at Coventry last year was in charge, and yes he did give a penalty try last night.

Subject: Rotherham Game - observations

Author:
Watcher
[Edit]

Date Posted: "Sun, Jan 31 2010, 10:30:23 GMT"

I'd endorse the earlier comments about the game made below by Truth Seeker. Rotherham is a difficult place to go and win and we were well worth the victory.

Roth inexplicably missed a couple of "sitters" in front of the posts and came back to score just before half time and were very competitve so this was no easy victory although disappointing for their supporters who were gracious enough to accept they were beaten by a better team.

Our pack stiffled the life out of them in tight and loose, scrummaging was excellent despite another referee inexperienced in front row play who at one time gave a penalty against Nathan Williams for dropping a scrum when we were going forward! He also could have penalised Roth much more for scrum infringements when our pressure came on.

Referee did seem to want to keep the game moving though with relatively few penalties. Wasn't sure whether that was due to the good discipline of both teams. He did miss a couple of Roth players coming in from the side around rucks and mauls on occasions but overall he did not try to be the centre of attention as some referees do.

New players played well. Casson was lively at scrum half and could have been a bit better protected by his pack at times when the rucks were static. He seemed to have a good balance between moving good ball quickly and making some space for our backs and playing the slow game when slow ball warranted it. He was replaced by Gareth with 15 mins to go to close out the game after courageously taking a big hit under a high ball.

Full back didn't do anything wrong, was secure under the high ball and showed some glimpses of what he could do running with the ball. Best option in that position we've had all season.

Callum MacBurnie was good. He gave an immaculate "draw and pass" to put Nathan Bressington in for his try. I hate to think what Jonny May would have done in the same situation with the ball tucked under his arm! Many suporters were suggesting that Jonny should be on the wing where he would be great as he is not a centre whereas Callum is.

Scrummaging excellent, line out, a bit poor in parts but then so was theirs and it was unclear how much effect the wind was having on this and on Adam Caves occasional "not straights".

Tristan Roberts was better and he tried to move the ball in the backs who ran with a more purpose and direction and started to look more dangerous than recently. Having good quick ball does help! However Tristan is still abysmally poor with his kicking out of hand, aimlessly again giving ball away kicking down the middle to give the opposition all the options running back at us. He also again missed kicks to touch from penalties which is just not acceptable. Altough he kicked far less he still didn't need to kick as often as he did as we controlled the game with the ball in hand. This area could be crucial in tighter games

Overall, though a very pleasing result and a good team effort. What it showed was that we are a very capable side when we want to be. At least that's better than not having decent players at all! Good performance, well done players and to the coaches who should also be applauded for making the three changes in the backs and getting it right on the day.

What is the sanction if a team finishing in the top 8 goes into administration after the play-offs begin? If a 15 point deduction would have meant a club finished in the bottom 4 would they replace the team finishing 9th?

Make no mistake, this is an excellent result for Moseley and a huge amount of credit goes to all involved. We know from being present (at home games at least) and from this message board that more recent performances have left a lot to be desired but Mose have won 4 out of the last 5 and given the league structure that is what counts.

That is the good news!

If only it were all so rosy. Look at the remaining fixtures for Plymouth, Doncaster and Rotherham and 41 points is unlikely to be enough and I would be nervous about 42. One more win from Bedford, Exeter and Bristol would probably do it as might a couple of bonus points. It would also help if the massive influx of players at Bees were to start to gel and prevent wins by Doncaster and Plymouth at SXR and it would be nice if Coventry found some form and beat Doncaster.

All of Moseley's 9 wins have come against the bottom 5 - we need to find one aginst the top half in the next three matches.

I know the following line annoys some as an inanity which doesn't make things better, but it shows that I'm right behind the players, coaches and the club as a whole ...

Come on Mose!

I seriously hope that this message board isn't going to be doom and gloom for all of 2010. Every message on this board is banging on about how bad Moseley is either run, coached, ill funded, etc etc. The list goes on and on. But when not even 10months ago we were celebrating maybe one of the greatest things to happen to the club in god knows how many years. Week in week out I see nothing but hard work going on, from the guys on the pitch to girls and guys serving pints behind the bar. This is shown even more by the fantastic job done by the people behind the new stand plans, for which a huge thank you should go to. Now I know everyone is entitled to their opinion but seriously guys why can't we help the players and staff to keep their heads held high when they walk out on match day. Maybe instead of accusing every man under the sun we should look a little closer to home and buck our own ideas up and help the club reach the heights that we all know it can and that it deserves.

Another thing I know is that this post will more than likely get a huge pounding like most of the others trying to get fans to smile and cheer instead of the moaning and groaning. Players looking at this board probably wonder why they even bother trying please most of us fans, after slanging matches going on

Good luck to the boys at the weekend and rest of the season!! Come on Moseley!!!

If we lose to Roth I feel there is a very good chance that we will not make top 8 and even end up in the third tier of English rugby !
An there are some very good teams in that division.
Do people think the likes of Rodders Reay Hall Muldowny Williams etc would hang about if that happens I doubt it.

Some clarification please - is it possible for any team to add loan players at any point of the season or is there a deadline post which no players can move?
The reason for my question is simply is it feasible that either Cov or the Bees could further strengthen their squads purely to facilitate the end of season play offs?
