So lets have a poll and see what names are chucked in the hat to take over the DoR?

I will start and suggest John Brian would be a good man for the job.

If London Scottish get back up next season maybe we could let them develop SCOTLAND qualified players and share their RFU £300,000 between the other 11 clubs. Or £600,000 between 10 if the Welsh wanted the same deal?

- though it might not be a brilliant one!

I remember a couple of years ago being part of a team that leafleted the area, advertising the Club. I can't remember what the leaflet said but as far as I'm aware it didn't have a great effect on attendances.

I worked the area around Billesley Lane, some twenty minutes walk away - and it was hard work too! I've no idea what other areas were covered.

I was wondering whether we might have a better response if we were to issue a leaflet that gave free access to one or two matches and made sure that every house in the area close to the Club got one - say within ten minutes walk away.

What do you think?

I bumped into one of our star players from this season a couple of days ago and we had a brief but illuminating conversation. I'm not going to give his name but unfortunately he will not be with us next year as he is off to 'better himself' at a Premiership club.

It was interesting to get his perspective on Moseley and where we are in the great scheme of things. One of his comments that stuck in my mind was his view that finishing 8th in the league would have been like winning the league based on our current resources. He referred to our portakabins and, as we must surely know, this must create a less than imposing site to prospective recruits.

I got the impression from him that some players simply see Moseley as a place to come and get some first team action before progressing their careers elsewhere (and who can blame them). He also thought that Moseley had been exceptionally good at picking up players in this category.

I guess I conclude the following from this brief conversation:-

If we are to progress, the club's physical infrastructure needs to be better whether it is a 5,000 seater stand or a more modest initial construction.

I have no idea how the club's recruitment of players works but, bearing in mind our limited budget, we must heap praise on the coaches and others who have found players whether at the start or towards the end of their careers who have kept us where we are for the last few years.

This will continue until we break out of our bottom 4/6 position. If we want to make the breakthrough and become a top 6 club we will need to support the planned developments (whether we agree with every detail or not) or we will be consigned to remaining a bottom 4 club facing a struggle every year.

I've no idea who is involved in the process of appointing a new coach but I for one would like someone with a bit more ambition than simply aiming to keep us out the bottom 4. With that in mind the package on offer needs to include a vision of the future which a new coach can buy into.

While I'm on the subject of a new coach can we get someone please who can communicate with the supporters. Ian Smith may have been a great coach but his communication skills with supporters was virtually non existent. On the subject of Ian Smith and regardless of my reservations about him I thought he deserved some sort of presentation/vote of thanks etc at last Saturdays game.

If there is a vision to move the club forwards it requires everyone to work together and to 'buy into it'. The head coach will be seen as the public face of the club and we badly need someone who can pull together all sections of the club.

My apologies for rambling on! Just some randon thoughts following my chat with one of our (soon to be former) stars.

By the way what a charming man - best wishes to him for the future.

We are reaching the end of a disappointing season and there are a number of things I would like to say.

1. I am sorry to see Ian Smith depart. I sincerely hope that it was his choice and that some of the vitriolic personal attacks made on this board were not a factor in that decision. Many have expressed their thanks and memories of his time in charge and I would like to add mine. Whilst lifting a trophy at Twickenham was not something I had ever really considered for Moseley in my lifetime, it was a genuinely thrilling day; in my view, however, the most important result in his time was actually the defeat of Exeter in the infamous ‘double header’ which not only put paid to Exeter’s title hopes and took Moseley to Twickenham, it was an invaluable 5 points which took Mose to the brink of safety in the relegation restructuring year. In his time as Head Coach, Mose often punched above their weight and at times played some beautifully crafted rugby (think Andy Binns’ try at Twickenham).

Last season under Smith & Caskie, Mose amassed well in excess of 40 points – sadly not quite enough to get out of Pool C, but a highly creditable performance. Yes, the play-offs last season were too close for comfort but the season was a broadly successful one on the pitch with 10 wins.

This season, Mose have rarely looked anything other than Pool C material. What was most disturbing in my view was that, at times, there appeared to be a lack of team spirit. It certainly wasn’t lacking in the play-offs, but team spirit is the responsibility of both the team and the coaches and if there were players or coaches causing divisions then it needed to be stamped out more quickly than it was.

The Glos link, in which Smith was instrumental, worked well for a couple of years. It was meant to last three years (the first being not overly satisfactory) before Mose went full-time/stood on their two feet. That is essentially what happened this season and, arguably, Mose and its budget found its own level. I don’t know who’s idea it was to have a Moseley pack, but it certainly paid big dividends.

I do not know whether Smith’s departure will be beneficial – I will reserve judgment until I see who the replacement is and what improvement there is.
Who should it be? How about the England 7s coach with John White as back up if he keeps the 7s job and is away on occasions? Whoever it is needs to do the sort of job that Bester has done at Roth. The budget is not likely to grow miraculously and it is a case of making the most of what you’ve got.

2. The stand needs to be built. At Bournbrook, no bar meant practically no income. At Billesley, the bar has enabled progress on the pitch because it has brought income which has helped the club to run at broadly break even (with no little help from Dave Warren). Finding the finance to build it is tough in any environment, let alone the deepest recession since the 1930s, but this is the most likely way that the club can move forward financially and needs to happen. Donny had lottery funding for Castle Park, but the lottery seems pushed towards the Olympics. Edgbaston was rebuilt with a large loan from the Council, but that was an economic loan as Test matches and ODIs bring substantial revenue to the city – sadly, Moseley are not going to do that in the near future.

3. The club would not exist without the likes of Dave Warren, Alan Adam and co. For people to hold opinions about them is one thing, but the lack of gratefulness from some beggars belief. I believe that if someone with the ability to invest in the club came forward tomorrow, they would be welcomed with open arms. Rugby, and Moseley in particular, needs people like this.

4. We all want the best for Moseley, but when people criticise they need to be constructive about it. “Smith out”, “Adam out”, just doesn’t cut it and puts people off both the message board and the club. I would never want to stop debate, but it would be great if the level of debate were raised a level or two and got above the personal attacks of which some are so fond. It is interesting how the AGM is always conducted in a civilised manner – let’s try to keep the board that way too.

5. Apologies for the length of this missive.

Come on Mose!

The club is restructering its playing management for next season.

Negotiations are at an advanced stage for the appointment a full time strength and conditioning coach who will be responsible for the continuous fitness and monitoring of all full time and part time players in a more full time professional environment at the club.

Head Coach Ian Smith will be leaving to pursue other options elsewhere and a full time Director of Rugby/Head Coach who will be based at Billesley is being appointed. The specifications for this post will be confirmed shortly and applications (in strict confidence) will be invited. The appointment will be made well in advance of pre season training which will commence in mid June. Meanwhile the bulk of the current squad are in the process of being offered contracts to build upon the development in performance made towards the end of the season. In addition the squad will also be strengthened were considered necessary.

The club would like to place on record its appreciation of the invaluable service which Ian Smith has given over the last seven years. Along with Don Caskie and latterly with Kevin Maggs this season, Ian has developed the team into a respected side in the Championship from a lowly position in the third tier of English rugby when he arrived. The winning of the EDF Trophy at Twickenham was a highlight of his time in charge and provided some wonderful memories to Moseley people.

Ian will always be welcome at Billesley and the club wishes his well in the future and looks forward to seeing him at the club when he is able. Meanwhile we would encourage everyone to be at the Plymouth game on Saturday to give him a well deserved send off from his last Championship game in charge of Moseley.

Yes, I am relieved we’ve avoided the drop and in so doing have despatched Bees to a more appropriate place, albeit 12 months late [and yes Moseley’s performance at the end of last season still rankles]. Me, and several other ‘die hards’ would support Moseley in whatever tier of English rugby they found themselves in – but just what are Alan Adam and John Beale etc going to do to keep us where we currently are!

Far from the ‘Revival Continuing’, it has floundered and has to date only been kept afloat by clubs in similar situations such as Coventry and Bees being relegated before us. Next season Moseley will be the whipping boys and will get relegated if those with the power continue to keep their heads buried in the sand and make the wrong decisions.

While it seems to me heresy to talk about changing the Coaching Staff, why should this be? There is no doubt that Ian Smith has been very good for the Club, taking us to Twickenham and winning a Trophy, but that was 3 seasons ago, what has the team achieved since? I am fully aware that there have been structural changes in our league, but when did we regularly beat teams in the top 3, or the next 3 for that matter. The vast majority of our performances have been dire, turgid affairs, lacking any idea of what’s required to effectively compete at the required level. I’ve had to witness several home games were we’ve conceded 3 scores before some of the Committee have even taken their seats. Enough. Ian’s time has come, as has that of Kevin Maggs who has had no discernible impact this season that I can see.

The Club needs to put aside thoughts of an ‘x’ thousand seater new stand, updating an embarrassment of a Club Shop [is it 3 or 4 kit suppliers in the last 3 years?] and bleak website, improvements to the ground’s infrastructure and floodlights, and focus clearly and concisely on one thing - improving the playing record. For that we need a new, fresh and dynamic Coaching Staff, who can pull together those players that stay and the new ones that hopefully join into an effective winning team. If the same old tired faces remain, it’s certain we’ll soon be renewing our old rivalries with Cov and Bees.

Just a suggestion for next season could something be done on message board so that users have a proper log in and use their own name. Might solve some problems that seem aparrent e.g people using other users names.

and before you bite my head of I know we were only safe from the drop on Sunday (i was there) but it does highlight that other teams are building for next season and have probably been for sometime, something we can not do if we dont know which division we will be in.

Now that we know the date of our last home game of the season we have set the timescale for voting for the Moseley Supporters Player of the season. The award, Lionel Moriaty Golden Boot, shall be awarded to the winning player after the final home game of the season against Plymouth Albion on Saturday 16th April. Voting shall begin this Friday (11th March) to coincide with our first playoff game, away against Plymouth Albion. Voting will then end at midday on Thursday 14th April.

The way you vote this year has slightly changed. The main vote will be available from the MSA website, find the link on the homepage. For all those without an Internet connection, a ballot box will be available in the clubhouse, on the MSA table, for the two home playoff fixtures against Birmingham & Solihull and Esher.

There are, of course, a few rules.
- One vote per person only.
- Voters must have seen Moseley 1st XV play more than once this season.
- Non Internet users can vote at the first two home playoff fixtures against Birmingham & Solihull and Esher using ballot papers provided (please do help your friends by ensuring that any supporter you know, who is not an Internet user, is aware of this)
- Eligible players are those who have played for the 1st XV in the 2010/11 season up to and including 10th April 2011. These can be found online and on the reverse of the ballot paper.
- Closing date is Thursday 14th April at midday. Any votes received after this time shall not be counted.

The MSA would like to say a huge thank you to Roger Hildreth, John Clayton, Bryan Skeeles, Terry Davies and Dave Bettis for running the award whilst the MSA was away.

Happy voting :)
