So lets have a poll and see what names are chucked in the hat to take over the DoR?

I will start and suggest John Brian would be a good man for the job.

So far so amusing. Why don't we just give the management the time and space to make the most appropriate choice?

How about getting a new coach in who is doing well in the lower leagues? Macclesfield & rosslyn park got promoted last year & are doing well in the division below & Barking got promoted & are sitting top of national 1 !

Let's shop around, why would we want the two coaches who have been relegated in the last two seasons??

Is Sir Clive or Brian Ashton not available ?

I think some people are right in thinking a coach from the lower leagues, who on merit is in the ascendancy, might make a better candidate. Someone who is used to making tight financial decisions, having to work with limited squads etc might bring a lot of enthusiasm, dedication, and effort to the post.

Well as you no theres only one manager/coach this season whos going to be proven at this level and that the one who takes a team up to Prem, so out of the hundreds out there have you a fresh idea, I see Sanderson has applied, whats his experiance. I'm not saying Stanley's the man or anything, but he has been putting out teams weekin week out in the A leauge/ development against prem level ain't that much different to championship level, last season one Worc Leicester A game contained 6 international and 2 Lions, which is more than most championship teams can boast. Look the message board asked for ideas!! It was just a different option.

...the vaguely sensible (not necessarily desireable) suggestions are as follows with a few observations (not based on any inside info, just general knowledge/supposition):

Russel Earnshaw; being honest I think he'll stick with Bees if they can offer a package to keep him. I also think it's a case of once bitten twice shy for Mose where England 7s are concerned and that's probably as big a put-off as the performance of Bees this season.

Phil Maynard; never, never, never, never, never!!!!!!!!!!!!

Paul Hull; Trying to read between the lines of interviews he might be seeking an appointment at a higher level. Difficult to assess his effectiveness at Bristol as he inherited a team in decline (perhaps?) and then lost much of his squad after relegation and subsequently losing out to a well organised assault on the Play-offs from Exe. May well be looking for a larger pay packet than we can manage.

Kevin Maggs; His playing record speaks for itself but is relatively inexperienced as a coach. Joined us too late to have any input on selection last season but presumably had a hand or at least a say in late season signings among whom Armitage was a belter and Bishay looked sharp when he got some game time. It's hard (or harsh) to judge his impact working with a team someone else put together. Continuity would be a strong argument in his favour, especially given that he is presumably working with Smithy on retention and recruitment at the moment. Probably the front runner?

Paul Grayson; From what i've heard/read Grayson is very well regarded in the Northampton set up. Currently working as skills coach he'll probably have to move out of the shadow of the Mallinder/West regime to progress his own career so DoR in a Championship club may well be an enticing opportunity for him. It's probable that the salary he's on as assisstant coach at Saints may be higher than the top job money in the Championship but it may be a price worth paying to take the next step.

Allan Lewis; appointed as director of Gloucester's whole academy set up last season so probably not looking for a move. Also will the club want a "new face" rather than looking back to past eras?

Lynn Howells; TBH would be on my shortlist. Donny have seemed to do quite well under his guidance without having a massive budget or making any "stella" signings. Experienced at this level and knows the Championship well; could he be the man to take forward the work done by Smithy? May be a very good option if Maggsy is judged a season or 2 light on experince to take over the top role.

Who have I missed?

TBH I didn't really see it a s realistic option. Being honest the last time we signed a former England Back Row as player coach it didn't work out too well. To my mind we need someone who is not "distracted" from coaching responsibilities by having to work on their own conditioning etc, but rather a full time DoR with the skill set and personality to get the squad to gel and perform with a greater degree of consistency.

Q. Does anybody have an idea what Barking plan to do next, whether promoted or not? The rumour mill is grinding!

A. Good question. The first thing they will have to do is find some coaches. Alex Codling will be a good catch wherever he goes. Definately a coach on the up.
