having fallen out of my chair reading that article. I'm aware I'm hardly Ian Smith's biggest fan but that just takes the biscuit! Agree 100% with Harley's comments above.

Incredible thing to say by Ian Smith. Under the mentoring and guidance of Coach Richard Hill in France, Ollie spent over ayear developing his skills as a 10 !!! The French club went bankrupt and Ollie ended up back here, and without a shadow of a doubt his preferred position would be 10. That he is not 10 is only down to Ian Smith not picking him at 10 for any games save those two in pre season.
If Smith believes what he has just been quoted as saying then I would strongly suggest that as a "coach" Smith is the one who is in position to aid /develop/assist ( even select) Ollie in the position he suggests he should be working at.To effectively criticise ollie( who is on a Pay per play contract!) for wanting to get in the team , get game time and get paid , whatever the position is at the very least crass beyond belief!!!! Hers a thought .... how about offering him guidance, coaching, develoment in your position as head coach Ian smith?

Give it a rest!! Can the man never do right in your eyes! You must be reading a different article to the rest of us!

Which of the following quotes is Smith criticizing Ollie.

“He has definitely justified why he has to be in the side,” Smith insisted.

“You can’t go into any game without a recognised kicker and Ollie is a recognised kicker.”

“Saying that, I think his wing play is improving but he is a utility player who can play nine, ten, wing or full-back.”

Get off he soap box and support the team!

I for one read the article in the same way as Harley(although from memory Ollie played outside centre in the pre-season games) - for Smithy to say that Ollie should concentrate on one position is odd - does Smithy want Ollie to refuse to play in any other position other than 10 and say that this is my position so pick me ? Is Ollie happy to be a utility back and play anywhere ?

I don't know either Ollie or Smithy so I have no idea.

My opinion is that the best position for Ollie would be 10, would it be a gamble ? yes probably, but I know a few that would welcome the selection. If he is not selected at 10 then he still needs to get into the team for his attacking skill and goal kicking.

Will be interesting to see what develops in the close season re contract offers/recruitment. Will we see Ollie signed up, told you are first choice fly half and lets develop and build a back line round him ?

From the viewpoint of an opponent, if they play against Mose next season with Ollie at 10, would they see him as a threat or a weakness ? I'd think they would see him more as threat

Anyway, enough of my speculation, the most important thing for now is the Bees game on Sunday, lets get behind the team whoever plays and lets get Mose safe and Bees relegated !!

I too don’t know either Ollie or Smith and not trying to read things into it and impose my own bias could the interpretation not be:

That Ollie has to be in the team somewhere as he is such a strong kicker and not weak in any position that he plays. From the teams point of view it has been a bonus to have such a player in the squad who we can call on to give a sound game wherever he plays. But from Ollie’s point of view it would be in his interests to play in one position. As a coach Smithy has to balance the development of the player with the needs of the team

It is clear that Smith thinks Brad Davies is the stronger 10 – this is not a criticism of Ollie. I don’t read into this any criticism of Ollie or that Smith has done anything other than his duty to the team.

But you can never satisfy some people who continuously bang on about wanting a new coach whatever the results or whatever he says or does.

I agree with Mr Steve we concentrate on winning the Bees game not criticising the coach or team

Did I not see Ollie playing at 10 often when we had the ball (in the home esher game) only for him to slot in on the wing when they had possession, if that could work then it surely is the best compromise.
Ollie is one of the few flair players we have so should be given as many touches as possible

I like most on here will surely think the most important thing this weekend is to beat Bees. I would be happy if its by 20 points or just an ollie Thomas penalty !
I'm not sure which wing Ollie will play, but please oh please, can we have someone in a position in the back 3 who CAN TACKLE Simon Hunt of Bees. If we can keep their try scoring opportunities to a minimum then with our pack and Ollies reliable boot we can score enough points to win this important game.
