I work at a vet clinic in a big city. I would say 50-60% of our patients are pit bulls or rottweilers. It is refreshing when every so often, we get an owner who is honestly concerned about the welfare of their pet pit bulls and rotts but, more often than not, when asked if they plan on spaying or neutering their dogs, they say no. They want them to have "at least one litter." There was one kid, about 16 yrs. old, just walked in off the street and asked a woman sitting in the waiting room if she would let his male pit "get together" with her female pit for a litter. That's the mentality we see. I thought she was going to deck him. The excuse of not having enough money comes up too, even though there are (very) low cost spay/neuter clinics available. It is never surprising later when they bring in their female with pyometra or breast tumors, or their male with testicular and prostate problems, all of which require surgery that cost in the thousands. We tell them the shelters are full of pits, but that doesn't matter.
I wish there was a law that anyone who wants to breed irresponsibly would have to spend a day administering euthansia shots to all of the healthy dogs that are put down every day--do that while while their tails are wagging and they're licking your face. They all ended up there through no fault of their own--somebody just wanted their dog to have "at least one litter."
