Dear PNG friends

Maybe I offer just some words?

Those of you who know and have been to PNG know that we are often quiet in normal conversation and easily dominated by those who come from other societies where it is enforced from childhood that you must speak out and be heard.

True in PNG there are also people like that but if you go to a meeting that is not political you see that few people usually speak and few hands are raised to ask questions.

It is easily for us to become dominated by expats. Our silence speaks but most expats cannot read what we are saying by being silent. Often it means we are too polite to disagree with you but we do disagree.

On Wantoks forum, when all of you start posting and posting do you notice that the forum goes dead? It goes dead for a reason, the silence there has meaning. It means you are dominating us again, like so often we are dominated by outsiders. A few speak out but most of us remain silent.

I know that all of you are trying to be positive and help places like Wantoks Forum but take a step back, look at the silence around you and think about what that might mean. Silence is speaking.

Perhaps you could pull back and let others dominate rather than yourselves. You might find that people really do have good things to say but they have been pushed back.

Thank you my friends. You may disagree with our culture and its norms but it is our culture and the way we normally conduct ourselves.
