Hello Jim McC, Ralph and Steve (alphabetically) I really enjoy reading your informative posts. I am interested in getting a six-inch elliptical for my White's V/sat. So, Steve add me to the list. I also have a GM-3, but it is like new as for some reason I have had better luck with my V/sat. I think the GM-3 runs too smooth?--- for me--- and I may be accidentally pushing it to hard?

My V/sat has a modified double ground balance and a slower V-sat limit (By Bill Lahr); and also the expanded ground-balance setting as does the GM-3.

Also, a Dean Chapman frequency control so I can work next to another GM. This setup has worked well for both Dean and I in western Nevada.

I especially like the toggle-switchable double ground balance capability which Bill L. added, as when I'm working both overburden and bedrock (as found in a western Nevada scraping) I can switch back and forth between the bedrock and overburden without needing to reset the ground balance.

Also, the DD-coil such as is now used on the GMT great; I use it in the more mineralized areas on my V/sat and I find I can roughhouse it w/o falsing.

Had the body-mount been available for the GMT I might have opted for a GMT; but went the Gold Strike route instead.

I also find the LST with the 10-inch elliptical coil and the 17000/32 kHz with the 6-inch circular DD as worthwhile options. In some western Nevada areas the old Gold Bug with the 6-inch coil also effective. Also, the GB-2 with the 6-inch coil.

I like trying out different machines/coils as each seem to have a good point. I'm more into looking for deeper targets and have found the larger coils effective in some areas.

In some eluvial placers tht are associated with Miocene lavas, (rather than Pliocene), tend to carry more silver content; and the leaching out of this silver--- as the natural refining eluvial nuggets go through--- and associated ferrous vein gangue can really give a prominent halo effect.

If anyone has ever dug a war-time silver nickle in a school or park you will appreciate the halo placer as electrum can also leach into the surrounding soil and give a strong signal.

For those that work western epithermal areas: I have dug a weak signal and disturbed the halo effect; so don't quit if you lose a signal especially on a hillside eluvial placer area; it may pay to be persistant and spend a few minutes in searching; even doing a little raking. Also, don't assume "white" quartz is barren.

And if you see small clear crystals of quartz slow down, you could be in a good area. The andesites and trachyes, etc; are saturated and don't contain free-quartz; if you see quartz in the country rock it is a possible eroded vein.
