Remembering from one of Joe's chats or answers from one of the questions from his fans...Here's the answer I'm hoping you are looking for.

Even though Joe and Cody were had a close companionship, Cody lived with his trainer and not Joe. Cody passed away during the third season of DQMW unfortunately and was really close to Joe. Cody's look alike (not sure his/her name) filled in afterwards, but there wasn't the same connection with Joe and the look alike.
