I agree with the scaling of RP xp based on level.

Marz - Many other people think that the level draining ability of certain undead is just too harsh. All of a sudden, because of a succesful hit, you have something that you've worked several sessions to gain just be taken away, with no saves or anything and all the undead had to do is to just make a normal attack on you? The people in WotC apparently think it is unfair as well and they have replaced it with a temporary ability drain. Still scary, especially if it is Con, it can kill you and it will go away on its own eventually.

Fender and Gord - I think that combat is too subjective to really come up with a good system for xp. Sure the fighter did alot of damage but what about the mage who incapacitated 3 other monsters with a spell or the cleric who kept the fighter healed up so he could go on? How do you measure how effective a fighter is? Does he get penalized for not protecting the spellcaster, which prevented him to cast the deus ex machina spell that the party needed? Do you penalize the rogue who couldn't get in a backstab in the battle or the fighter who rolled badly for damage? It's pretty subjective and, at its heart, the dice add an element of randomness to the whole thing on top of all of that. In 3E, since every class has the same xp table, you can just divide up the encounter xp equally between everyone with the occasional individual bonus for the odd brilliant or derring-do feat. But in 2E the classes have different xp tables for different reasons, either to balance them out or to account for the extra ways a class can gain xp. If it were up to me this is how I'd do it:

Usually in the battles, every fighter picks his 'bitch'. This is a monster where the fighter picks up early on and does the majority of the damage to. Sure this doesn't happen EVERY battle but that's the pattern that usually develops. Sometimes the DM will have to make adjustments if there are less monsters and it is totally based on the DM's opinion but with the 2E system it can't really be helped.

Wait! Even better! Let's switch to 3E! That will solve EVERYTHING! :-)

PS: I got the 3E DMG today. VERY cool book and MUCH better than the 2E DMG.
