Maybe the author was including &/or addressing all the discrancies(?) There are different countries in S. America that are more afluent than others & even within the ones that are better off, there are severe issues with economy, class & law enforcement. That could include birth certificates being issued @ all let alone accurately. Plus, one can assume, one can be obtained like a fake I.D. up here.

JP has a life-long pattern of meeting girls who are in their early teens & sometime later - how long, who knows - having affairs with them. And these are just the ones that are better known, it's well documented that he's had others on the side as well.

Jimena seems like she would be a lovely girl, but the inconsistancies you mentioned, plus the continual cover-up & complacency of those around him create quite a ruse for JP. And who knows what her parents, assuming there are two, were thinking. One or both may think that given the alternative options (marrying a non-wealthy man, if @ all), hooking her up w/a man over twice her age is the best thing that could happen.

Either way, her family is set for life - that could make them complicit in this case. That & JP's contributions to the charity could also provide a rationale or justification in his mind for being w/her.
