Hi Dave.

I'm probably not going to be much help to you as I'm recalling from memory, but on my 90 & 91 Accords (your 89 should be the same)...

You first have to access the service connector which is a blue, 2-pin connector behind (or around) the passenger-side kick panel. It will be a loose connector with nothing connected. Mine has an ORN/RED and GRN/WHT wires. Jumper the 2 pins together. This will prevent the ECU from altering the timing while you are setting it. You can verify the pins are shorted as the "Check Engine" light will be illuminated.

Then you can set the timing. Engine warm, timing light connected to #1 plug, etc.

There are fixed marks on the flywheel (MT) or drive plate (AT). (Here's where my memory is a little sketchy...)
One (rear most) white mark with a "T", indicates TDC, and the red mark (forward of the white mark about an inch or so), which might have shorter marks on each side ?? is the 15 degree BTDC mark.

Just set the timing to the red mark. Then remove the jumper from the service connector and your done.

Hope this is close enough to help...

Good luck and have a great weekend.

Mike
