Since you did not mention what was 'messed up' I am going on an assumption here that the company he kept was unsuitable versus any mission he pulled over there.

I would venture to guess that if he hadn't wanted to go back, he would not have. Next, he's drinking himself silly. Since you don't specify what he is drinking himself silly over, I can only assume he either picked it up and is now an alcoholic or he has survivor's guilt.

I am being rough here for a reason. I don't sense a lot of compassion from you at all. It is one thing to prevaricate over the god of government and what it supposedly does, but
you are also looking at this from your perceptions and your personal biases.

One other thing: Was he over 18 when he went in? If so, he went of his own free will and volunteered. He was not drafted nor was he coerced. When he is ready to get help he will. I am sure your SIL will be in tune and ready to be there when the time comes.
