Chapter 1
A Hanging in Eden

Charleston, June 1767

It was a hot day, even for Charleston in June. The best places were on the sea wall, where the air moved; here below, it was like being toasted alive. My shift was soaked through, and the cotton-bodice clung between my breasts. I wiped my face for the tenth time in as many minutes and lifted the heavy coil of my hair, hoping vainly for a cooling breeze upon my neck.

Whenever we get weather like we’re having now, I think of this passage - and thank God all I have to wear is underpants, shorts, a sleeveless top and crocs.
😊 ☀️

[> It's ridiculously hot for CT even in July and tomorrow we might exceed 100 F. We've been hanging out in the mall for relief. Imagine this heat, all those unwashed bodies, and the stink of chamber pots and outhouses. 🤢🥵 -- kgp, Sat, July 23 2022, 9:57:13
