  The Bulletin Board is a post made in hopes of slowing the scrolling of the Social Board. It is one place to go and look for any personal messages that might have been posted for us due to the loss of our email address (Email is more appropriate for personal messages).       • I understand your frustration Gwen. I mostly and usually like my American neighbours but they do forget the rest of the world sometimes. They seem to have a teeny tiny blind spot and don't realize that we Canadians, in some ways, identify far more with the Brits (and sometimes the French) than with them. Not to get political and the last thing I want to do is offend but hey you Yankees - we are not little Americans up here. (said with a smile and a hug). Echo (this is not a spoiler at all) touches on Canadian involvement in the revolution but doesn't get into how much we stayed Loyal, how many 1000's of Loyalists we sheltered and the 'echoes' of that are still felt, especially on days like Remembrance..               • Jayn....I understand where you are coming from too....the "in bed with an elephant" quote from one of your PMs is often used here in Scotland to describe our relationship with England....when smaller countries share an island (or in Canada's case a continent) with a much larger or more powerful neighbour then it often gets overlooked. I remember Inter-railing through Germany once and at the railway station at Saarbrucken there was a poster on the wall which said "Come to England and see Edinburgh Castle". It made me giggle. And one of my daughter's Sunday School books had a map of Britain on it and underneath it said... "England is an island".               • I TOTALLY AGREE with you, PM. We no longer have a media that reports the news with an unbiased view. And we certainly do NOT have the quality and integrity of, say, Walter Cronkite, Edward R. Murrow, or Chet Huntley and David Brinkley. It is my opinion that the news is fed to the American public in a way that divides us, and we are given only the barest minimum of World Events. I also believe that the popular media divides America instead of uniting us -- information is slanted according to demographics and region. Now, there are exceptions, and there are many Americans that are completely aware of the rest of the world. But there are, sadly, plenty of Americans that have no clue of events beyond their own neighborhoods and fear anything that doesn't exactly look or sound the same as themselves. I remember watching a documentary on WWII only recently (within the past year) and being astounded when after describing the Fall of France, the commentator said..."And now Britain stood alone" ....I was like..."what about Canada, or Australia, or New Zealand....not to mention the millions of volunteers from India". I know the commentator was trying to get across that Britain was alone in Europe and now Germany had conquered France she would be heading for us next....but we were not standing alone but were stading shoulder to shoulder with other Commonwealth countries! I will just toot our horn to let peope know that one of Prime Ministers, (the late) Lester B Person, won the Nobel Peace Prize and is internationally honoured for Canadian peacekkeeping in the world. And it was Canadians, led by Red Kelly (whom most think is a Texan) who put out the oil well fires in Iraq during and after the gulf war. On a lighter note we also invented the snowmobile and the zipper . And add the celebreties list Shania Twain, the Guess Who, Wayne Gretzky and we built the CanadaArm on the space shuttle.       • The grade school in our town always has a Veteran's Day service. It is held on the 11th of November, or as close as they can when the 11th is a weekend. It is always a marvelous and touching service. Our Boy Scouts put flags on the head stones of the veterans each year at the cemetary. Soon we will have the DVD of the Veteran's memorial that Taylor played bagpipes at. Yes... Men and Women from all over the world paid the ultimate sacrifice and all should be remembered. • I'm a grandma! Lily Katherine Playdon was born at 8:50 a.m. 5 lbs., 13 oz, 19 ". She's a wee one because she wasn't supposed to arrive until Dec. 11. Mom and baby are fine. I have to wait to hold my grandbaby because I have a sore throat and wasn't allowed in the birthing unit. Bummer! My DD Kirsten held Lily up to the window in the unit's door so I could at least see her. She's a cutie with a head of dark hair. -- Peg, Sat, November 07 2009, 16:50:23

    • I've never heard anyone take a religious stance on this, here in the UK or in New Zealand, where we also celebrated it, all my life.       • In Canada we have Simcoe day Aug 1st, honouring the first governor general (I think that is what he was, personally I honour it by drinking beer). Some have made that religious because, being British, he didn't/doesn't represent all the founding peoples. Ok politically he didn't but religious - give me a break. A lot of folk around here also make Thanksgiving religious instead of just being thankful.     • I would think that 400-odd years ago, the political/religious significance (the religious divide being a Big part of the political situation then) was a very great part of the "celebration". That has (thankfully) been eroded over time, and I also wouldnt say anyone seriously considers it now...though with a bit of an exception. Guy Fawkes, besides being Catholic, was a Scot, and popular Scots sentiment at the time (at least in private) considered it a shame that he and his co-conspirators hadn't succeeded.       • The whole Catholic v Protestant thing is much bigger in Scotland than anywhere else in the UK (other than Ireland) so I'm not surprised they treated it more as a religious thing. I used to love making my guy and getting pennies for him. And burning him on the bonfire. I never gave it a thought as to why he tried to blow up the king and parliament just that he shouldn't have and thats why he was burning. We've always called it Bonfire Night though, the Guy Fawkes stuff was just something you did on Bonfire Night. I still love it although you don't see kids doing penny for the guy anymore.   Bob and I were having a very nice dinner on the beach last night when these four ran to the front of our table (on the beach) and chanted "something something trick or treat." "Oh how cute," I said But what did they want? We had no candy or anything to give *rolling eyes*. I took their picture and showed it to them and heard many giggles and much laughter and then they continued with the chant.... I managed to get them to understand me--that I did not know what they wanted. ;-) They ran off. Three minutes later they were back chanting... Money... Money... (uh huh) I laughed and said, oh so you DO speak English, Bob soon ran out of coins. We were now targets and these four seemingly told all their friends. They really were cute.

Left the cafe with my friend, heading to the Louvre, and we got swarmed by a mass of kids and they tried to rip us off, attempting to cut my purse , tearing at our clothes, etc. Thank GOD! the police saw and helped us out.   • Bruce Springsteen. If you ever get a chance to see him, do it. I went last night (2nd time) and had a blast. He is the most amazing performer... played for 3 hours with no break. My sister and I lucked out and went down to the Verizon Center to buy our tickets from the scalpers. Once the show started, it was easy to find cheap tickets... they were giving them away!!!     • Cool. I never saw him. Glad you got in on it and had a good time. One of my friend's daughter got pulled up on stage by Bruce and he carried her around, lifted her off her feet and danced with her while he sang. He then placed her gently in her Dad's arms (they were 2 rows from the front). It was all caught on video and made it to You Tube.
