  • What a morning! Woke up to nuisance snow - my usually 25 minute commute was almost an hour. Had to walk from my bus stop to my building because second bus was nowhere in sight & I was already late. The sidewalk was a sheet of ice & I found a lady who had slipped & thought her leg was broken! Called 911, gave her my scarf to sit on rather than the block of ice on the sidewalk. Police came & I went to get my usual bagel for breakfast. The manager of the bagel shop asked why I was late, I told her, & she took a hot chocolate out to the poor lady who fell.   • Hi Everyone! Sorry I have been MIA lately. I finally went to the doctor today, because I have still been feeling like shite. Well, I have an ear infection to go along with the nasty cold.       • There was a contretemps in The Castro yesterday, apparently, when a GS and her adult companion accessorized their cookie stand with naked Ken and Barbie dolls holding Rainbow Flags. I'm not quite sure how this was supposed to all work together --the dolls weren't for sale. But, someone objected to the naked dolls, surprising in the Castro.     • I agree! A friend was crowing the other day that the sunset would be 7:15 p.m., to which I pointed out that sunrise will be 7:10 a.m., so it's back to going to work in the dark once again.   • I'm chiming in and totally agree! The dayrise is now 8:00 and the sunsets at 8:00. The kids are going to school in the dark again...and it's too COLD outside to be out at 8:00 p.m. anyway!       • I also hate DST and don't understand the point. But what really bugs me is that a few years ago when the US decided to move the date several weeks we in Canada had to follow suit. Now, I understand all the practical ramifications and so on, it makes sense to change at the same time but if you think of it DST matters more or less depending on your latitude (ie the further from the equator the more it affects you) and since Canada is both further from the equator and way bigger than the US, it would make better sense to make the change around Canadian daylight times. Also, having said I get the practical considerations of being at the same time as the US, one of our provinces, Saskatchewan, doesn't switch at all and no ones there has died of it. Just sayin'.     • As a night shift worker, DST day is one of my favorite days of the year. :) Since I sleep in the daytime, I prefer the daylight later in the evening.   • Happy Hump Day to all - and Happy Day for my household as my cat Emma has come home from the hospital! She's been there since Saturday - diagnosis: pneumonia. Brought her home last night, and she seemed to sleep okay, just a few moments of labored breathing (which was hard to listen to), plus having to calm my other cat, Gabbi, who thought this was a 'new' cat in the house (why are their brains so small *g*?) Going to work from home today as Emma needs meds and 'breathing' treatments (time in the bathroom with the hot shower running). Anyway, just glad she's home again.     • Wishing continued improvement to Emma! I think cats can sniff out that vet smell, and that's why they seem so unwelcoming when someone returns from animal hospital land.       • I had this happen with another pair of cats - back in Windsor. Taffy had gone to the vet for dental work, was only gone for the day, but Mouse decided that she was totally NOT Taffy -for SIX MONTHS, I had to deal with hissing, fighting, etc. -it was totally bizarre - even the vet didn't understand why Mouse was being such a pain.   I was told this is aloe. I've had many potted aloe plants in the past, but this collection is huge. I've never seen aloe like this before. It had rained the night before I took this photo and the water drops were so shiny and pretty on the dark green stems. Have a good one!

  • I think my family considers me their personal chef. Boy are they wrong. Aloe has a wide variety of, species I guess is the word; they are all similar looking and with the fat gelatin leaves, but not all are medicinal. That is the sum total of my knowledge of aloe.   • This kind of aloe grows all over California. If you burn yourself, get a sharp knife, cut off one of those spires, and rub the clear, jelly-like stuff all over the burn.
