• Bit of a question out of left field but can any of you ladies tell me how far it is, in today's terms, from Lallybroch to Inverness (ie 20 mins, 2 hours etc). The map in the Companion shows it being roughly equal to the distance from Inverness to Culloden.   • From the map in the Companion, I calculated it to be about 70 miles west of Inverness, and there is absolutely nothing in that part of Scotland (except beautiful mountains and peaceful glens). I mapped it out seven years ago when I started doing the Outlander Tours, and if you look at the map of Scotland and find Loch Monar, it would be slightly southwest of the westernmost tip of the loch.   • A 70 mile trek on horseback or foot in that terrain would take two days of hard treking. You could maybe make Inverness to Fort Augustus in a day, but that is walking a hillside near Loch Ness. To be honest this isn't anything like what I imagined the highlands to be like, I think I pictured more of a Smokey Mountains (Banff is the only Rockies I have seen). One thing to note about the terrain, Jayn...200-odd years ago, there would have been more forested areas in many places in the Highlands, including Glen Strathfarrer.       • The last grown up movie I saw at the theatre was Forest Gump. Rarely go, too loud, too many flashing lights, I can't hear them right and end up nauseous. I suffered through many movies before my kids got old enough that I can see them into the theatre and wait in the coffee shop.   • I spent the morning at my mom's and on her wee little kitchen radio that she always has tuned to an AM talk station, they were playing all the old war broadcasts and speeches, interspersed with songs from the era. It was so touching and while listening I was reading the paper that had a story of a Calgary WWII vet that has been looking for an orphan that he met in France after bombings leveled a couple of towns (the boy shared rations and slept under trucks with the soldiers for several days). When they had to leave, they left the boy with a displaced woman and baby, they cleaned a bombed out shack for her so she would at least have shelter and left her some food. A photo of him holding hands with the boy (who would be 77 now *g*) was on the front page of all the Cdn papers at the time and he keeps it close by. These stories just can never be forgotten. • Meeting Diana -- astrokath, Tue, November 10 2009, 14:35:42
  I had the great privilege yesterday of having lunch with Diana and then hearing her speak in the evening.
  
  Her publisher's rep here in Adelaide organised a lunch at a very nice restaurant, and invited a couple of people from five book shops. My boss couldn't go so I was the only one from our shop, making a party of only 11 for lunch. Wonderful three course meal with lots of lovely Shaw & Smith Sauvignon Blanc from our Adelaide Hills. I sat opposite Diana, and we all had a chance to talk about a lot of 'ordinary' things like our dogs and children, as well as about the books.
  Those of you who have met Diana will know what a delightful person she is, so interesting and intelligent.
  Then last night the shop co-hosted a literary event, where Diana spoke for the best part of an hour, then very graciously signed books for everyone of the approximately 250 people who were there, I think!
  She told several funny and interesting stories, and said that after ABOSAA, several people contacted her saying they were sorry there would be no more books. When she asked why they thought that, they replied that all the loose ends had been tidied up so nicely.........
  So this time she left us in no doubt!
  
  Sorry for such a long post but it was such an exciting day, and I needed to share it with some people who will understand!

  • Don't know if anyone has mentioned it and I've missed it but today is the 20th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall. I remember watching the TV on the night when the wall began to come down with tears streaming down my face. The wall was already in place by the time I was born and it and the Cold War provided a backdrop to my life growing up in Scotland. I never thought that things would change in my lifetime....but the fall of the Wall, the end of apartheid in SA, and the moves in N. Ireland towards peace....none of which I thought would change.....have made me optimistic that no matter how entrenched things seem.....they can change when people will it. Just before the 11th hour, we gather at the cenotaph to honour those who have served, died and are still serving in many wars around the world. It is timed so the last post is just before 11 am, followed by 2 minutes silence, and then reveller. This day was chosen as it is the day the Germans signed to end hostilities in 1918 after The War to End all Wars. I have had the privilege of observing Remembrance Day in our nation's capital several times. It is a very moving ceremony. It is also very poignant in the thousands of smaller communities across the country. No matter where you are, or what your politics are, on November 11, please remember those who have sacrificed for our freedom and peace. It's the least we can do!   • To clarify the Sunday vs the 11th issue. The 11th is absolutely Remembrance Day officially and in most of our hearts and minds. What I meant is that in most every community it is honoured the Sunday prior. That is the day that, especially in smaller communities like mine, all the churches come together to hold an ecumenical Remembrance Service then march to the cenotaph for the Laying of the Wreaths. I suppose that we do it on Sunday simply becuae Remembrance Day is not a 'day off' (although I think it used to be) and most people cannot/willnot take time off work during the week for it. The Royal Canadian Legion still holds cenotaph services on the 11th, and the Federal (provincial?) governments do also, and when I worked it was never an issue to take an hour or so to attend. I do apoligise to those I surprised to confused or (heaven forbid I did it again) offended by suggesting the official day has been changed, I only meant the - I don't know the word - the noticed (?) day. It is a Stat Holiday in Canada but many companies will work it in lieu of Boxing Day which is not. R Day as a stat is for federally regulated companies (most businesses are not, mostly you have to do business nationally, think postal, some transport, television/radio but not usually newspaper...) and a majority of employees must choose if they want another day in lieu. The provinces have leeway for other stat days for non-federally regulated companies, In Ontario Boxing Day is a stat day. Most days line up as a matter of commen sense. Quebec has St John Baptist Day in June, (which I am pretty sure is stat since the whole province closes down).         • Yeah, Remeberance Day is a stat for me-if I work I get extra pay and also get a day off in lieu of it. Bigger cities celebrate on the day with legion parades. etc. I thought Boxing Day was a country wide stat-not just Ontario. Jodi, is Boxing Day a stat in Calgary?               • Oh yeah. So you are federally regulated (my new fave expression ). My dh is that but he is salary so doesn't get stat pay as such ever. Also he travels so can fake days, no one knows where he really is anyway. As far as his boss knows he wasn't putting in our floor last week, he was working hard (he works enough overtime and overnight trips - no guilt, think his boss knew anyway).   • Jayn, I am curious to know where you are? Here in southern Ontario, our community service is still on the 11th. Each church will have their own Remembrance Service the Sunday before, but we join as a community on the 11th. I live in a town of 1400, so very small. The local elementary schools have their own programs in school, but the local high school attends at the cenetaph. All the local communites around here still meet at the cenotaph on the 11th. It is a holiday for some (banks, post, DH who works in corrections) but not all. It used to be when I was a kid (I always paraded with guides), but I think they wanted the kids in school so they would actually learn something, and not just get a day off. I am in Beeton which is near Alliston, and all the communities I am aware of held it today, although I would be thrilled to know of one that still holds it on the 11th. Our local Legion did it here today and will go up to Alliston on Wed (at least that is how they did it last year). Used to be almost everyone closed but I didn't think anyone at all still did.   • I have been thinking, since I started this (no idea what I was starting) maybe I can have the last word? I have learned something today, We all allready knew Canada is a huge and diverse place, I didn't realize (although I maybe should have done) that communities other than the Legion itself and the Feds honoured Remembrance on the 11th as they probably should. I have a certain envy for those of you whose areas have stuck to the 11th - today when so many think so much else is more important. I guess the most important thing is that we do go to the cenotaph, we do bow our heads for 2 minutes (sometimes 1) and we do remember and honour those who gave so much for us. Most of truly canna remember, we were not born yet, and we canna begin to comprehend the horror, but we can still honour the memory and fight any way necessary to preserve an honourable way of life. I've never heard of observances on Sundays before, only November 11th, which has always been a holiday as long as I've been around - both here in BC and in Saskatchewan.     • Nancy - a cenotaph is a tomb erected for someone whose remains are not obtainable in an unknown location. In Canada they are often statues of unknown soldier, sometimes a cross, or just a obelisk or such. There is usually a paved area around, sometimes they have steps up leading to them - probably there are as many descriptions as cenotaphs. Often they are located in front of the town hall or in a central park and there is usually at least a small park area, sometimes with benches. It is where we gather to observe Remembrance, and occasionally, other related services. - I know that on at least one occasion there was a gathering to pray for a peaceful resolution in Afghanastan but I don't know if they do that in other communities ever. At Remembrance Services we lay wreathsof flowers that stay as long as weather (and vandals) permit.       • Hi Jayn, I live in West Lorne. And I have to say, here, weather has nothing to do with it. I have stood at the cenotaph in rain, snow, sleet--you name it! It is usually miserable for Remembrance Day, but not this year it looks. The town where I grew up moves to a church following the cenotaph services (moment of silence, laying of the wreaths and poppies etc). The veterans of WW II are getting too old now to stand out in bad weather. But here we still stand outside for over an hour as we sing hymns, pray, have speeches and sermons, and lay wreaths and poppies. My kids will be laying a wreath on behalf of the youth of Canada and scouts. Amazing how traditions are so different! (NT) -- Heather, Mon, November 09 2009, 4:37:21
