Bowie is the alpha and omega! Now, let's see, I'm coming in late on this thread, but here goes: The Beatles are the best true band ever. All those screaming teenagers were right -- the melodies are catchy and brilliant.

And now, to show my age, a few other faves: The Sweet (how can you not love Ballroom Blitz?), Cream, the Minutemen (the SST label rocks), Led Zeppelin. And some good bands, but not in the all-time best running: Roxy Music; Queen (just *try* not to sing along to a Queen song. You can't do it); the Clash; the Cramps; Velvet Underground; U2 (yeah, I know, but they really have turned out some terrific songs); Bob Marley & the Wailers; Nirvana; Sonic Youth; GWAR (the music sucks, but the shows are unbelievable). I don't know where to class Motorhead and Metallica, the two loudest shows I ever attended. And finally, some bands everyone else seems to love that I don't: the Who, Elvis Costello, much of the Stones, most of REM (who started sucking bigtime in the early 80s but were okay, nothing more, until then).
