Subject: Are You a Muggle? ;)

Since we have two days.....I thought I should start a Harry Potter thread. So, for a few days---any expectations or speculations?

After the book is out---keep the info in the message section and not in the subject box. If you've got questions, ask them. And when you're done--let us know what you thought and what you think will happen next!

I'm wishing right now that I were in the mood to not procrastinate, because it means I'll be facing a deadline on Saturday and won't be able to spend the day reading. Maybe I'll surprise myself and work all day tomorrow prepping for the workshop I'm facilitating on Monday.....

I also wish that my sis and I had worked on her website, because she's ready to make some updates about the book..... Oh well, before the end of summer, I hope! She's got GREAT content, but the organization (my area) is poor. We're having creative differences. But that's just babble on my part....on to the speculation!

[> Whoooo! I did it! Yesterday I was finished with preparing a chunk of material for a workshop and decided to procrastinate on the rest of it for a while and I updated my sister's website! Take a look at Are You A Muggle.com to see part of her HP writings. Right now it's a narratology project, which is FASCINATING! Later we'll get parts of her thesis up, and the survey info she started the site with. Yay! -- C, 08:35:40 07/16/05 Sat [1]

Okay---I guessed when he got the book that it belonged to the Half-Blood Prince. Right about that one. I'm also wondering if the book was his mother's.

This is so much fun!

[> Finale spoilers inside...my thoughts and predictions... -- C, 20:34:21 07/16/05 Sat [1]

I just posted this at a thread at SD1 (Alias board) and thought I would copy it here....

In between bouts of baking, laundry, and lawn mowing, I just finished. I have to say that the emotion of the book--all the books really--is what keeps me reading.

I hadn't heard any spoilers for the books, but just as I knew there had to be a prophecy in the last one, I knew some time ago the Dumbledore had to die. Harry had to come to the point before he faces Voldemort to doing it on his own. And he can't really do that unless Dumbledore is dead and Harry is forced to renew within himself his purpose.

I thought the romance of this book was perfect---there a little bit, and meaningful to a 16 year olds who are living constantly in 'mortal peril,' but not overdone. I was glad to figure out what was up with Tonks. I was worried it was something horrible, but there were no clues in behavior, other than her being a bit down. It wouldn't have fit for it to come out before the scene in the hospital wing--perfectly done.

I agree with everyone who says that RAB is Regulus Black. I'm also wondering if the room where Harry put his Potions Book might have something. I know they said that Voldemort never got what he wanted when he returned to Hogwarts, but that room of junk in the Room of Requirement kind of struck me.

I wasn't certain who the HBP was, although sometime in the reading I had a fleeting thought that it might be Snape. With the way Horace was going on about Lily though, and Hermione's continued insistance that it could be a woman, I honestly wondered if it was Harry's mother---up until the point when Harry did the blood curse thing in the bathroom (yeah, don't have it in front of me to look up spelling!)

I think Hogwarts will open next year, because I can't see the series of 7 taking such a detour from the setting of the past 6 books. I think Harry is going to need Hogwarts. That's one reason I think one of the Horcruxes might be at Hogwarts. Either the place where Harry survived the curse or the school will be the final showdown.

I also wonder if Harry will 'inherit' or use some of Dumbledore's useful stuff---I'm thinking Fawkes and the Pensive could be key items that will pop up next book.

On the subject of Snape.....I still can't decide if he is good or bad. I think both. I agree with CQ that Dumbledore's knew Snape would kill him. I did have a fleeting thought that the curse would strike the locket and have it be destroyed (even if it was---lot of good that would do--destroying a fake locket). I also agree that Harry is wrong about why Snape trusts him. That's one reason I think Harry might get his hands on the pensive---to find out some of those things. I'm thinking he'll be working on the wrong side of the tracks next book, but will probably redeem himself in the end.

Predictions......Harry will return to Hogwarts (although maybe not spend the whole year there). He won't go it alone. He'll get more skilled as a wizard with every Horcrux thing he finds and destroys. Snape will be an enemy but find redemption. Hagrid will be a head of house. And someone will die to save Harry's life (someone in his peer group).

[> Sigh - with grad school I still haven't found time to read the first ones... plus the copies at our library are so nasty worn out that they gross me out to read.... so I can't read the new one, because I haven't read the rest!!! I think I'm going to have to give in and buy the paperbacks at walmart for 4.47 and read them soon though... or maybe I'll wait til I move out next january to a new town in the middle of winter, and don't have school anymore and let myself read them all then! -- Aria, 23:45:53 07/16/05 Sat [1]

[> [> Aria--you definitely need to invest the five bucks for the paperback, especially if the library ones are a mess. Once you start, it's hard to stop until you're out of material. Or see if your library has audio copies---although I always find them harder to follow unless I've actually read the book first. -- C, 20:03:01 07/17/05 Sun [1]

[> LOVED THE BOOK!!! Inside. -- The poster formerly known as JAGfan1, 22:18:12 07/17/05 Sun [1]

Just finished it today, only took me 2 days (just like the 4th one when I was 11). Loved it, but cried very very very hard at the end!!

For those who have read it, I would like to add my thoughts... don't read if you dont want SPOILERS!

Dumbledore... very very sad, can't believe he died... still upset about it actually, I was always sort of under the impression that no one could really kill him... don't know why. Very upset by this, actually, lol. He was my 2nd favorite character after Sirius (my luck is just out!!)

Relationships... can't say I saw the Hermione/Ron thing coming... I expected a Hermione/Harry thing... the Harry/Ginny thing was a little more predictable since she used to like him and all. Can't believe he broke up with her :(

Snape... oooh boy do I hate him, he is evil, ever since he made the Unbreakable Vow I knew he was evil, because since that is magic he can't break it, he wouldn't have done it if he wasn't evil... but I had my doubts through the book... until he killed Dumbledore, very sad.

C, I was wondering about the pensive too. Can memories still be accessed when their... um... owner, I guess... is dead? Dunno.

Prof. Slughorn, I think, will stay for the next year. They are now out, without snape or Slughorn, a potions AND defense against the dark arts teacher. Still thinking Hogwarts will reopen and Harry will return... I think he will realize that is what Dumbledore would have wanted.

I agree with C about the room of requirement, I was wondering if a Horcrux might not be hidden in there.

Malfoy... actually kind of felt sorry for him. I think he would've come over to our side had the death eaters not come out when they did.

Inferi... very creepy.

Half Blooded Prince... wow - I was under the impression the whole time that it was Voldemort. Whilest I was under that impression, I thought it might have been a Horcrux.

D'you guys think that RAB destroyed the original locket Horcrux? I was pretty peeved that Dumbledore died for nothing. How exactly should one go about destroying a Horcrux?

Overall... loved this book very much and definitely more than the 5th, which I thought was a little dark and grumpy. LOL. It was lighter, even though there was seriousness there was also fun... and Harry wasn't a butt to his friends this time... lol. Can't wait for the new one, how long is it now? LOLOLOL!

[> I took the boys to the mall Friday night for the HP party. Oh joy... Soo many kids running around, leaving food lying everywhere. Sigh, a long three hours. Anyway, one minute after midnight the books went on sale. My son started reading his when we got home at 1 am, but I told him not to stay up late. I started reading it Sunday after church and finished it Sunday night before bed. While leafing through the book, I caught one sentence that ruined it for me...inside for the rest.... -- Lisa, 12:26:49 07/19/05 Tue [1]

I caught two words--Dumbledore's funeral, so that ruined it for me. I knew he was going to die, so I kept watching for it. My son was sure I was going to cry, but I didn't. I was quite surprised how he died though. I got chills when I read Aveda Kadavera or whatever the spell was.

I laughed out loud at Fred and George's U-No-Poo. Leave it to them..

I was frustrated by Dumbledore's complete trust in Snape only to die by his wand. I don't like unanswered questions. lol

[> Loved thie book! The old Harry is back... -- Frances, 06:59:51 07/29/05 Fri [1]

Again, well written, great story, wonderful characters!

Spoilers!!!!

I think Dumbledore and Snape planned for just this continquiency. So he could get back into Lord V's good graces. I think Dumbledore was dying & knew it, and wanted Harry to get Snape, so he could "kill" him, as a way in. I think it was cool that Dumbledore wanted to save Draco. I think Snape is on the side of 'GOOD', because he could have killed Harry several times durning the fight, but didn't.
I have no idea who RAB is, but I hope he can help with the Horcruxes next year! I love Hagrid & his big heart!

What happened to the death curse???? Dumbledore's should have been a doozy--but no curse?? What's up with that?
(Just thought of that!)

I agree that Snape and Dumbledore planned the death to spare Draco from killing.

I think RAB is Sirus' brother, who is (or isn't?) dead.

What do you mean the "death curse?" I'm listening to it now on CD which I alwasy do after reading it, and I haven't gotten to the end yet. So maybe I'll figure it out. Dumbledore didn't try and kill anyone......(did he)?

Or do you mean the spell that someone could use to make a Horcrux when s/he commits murder?
