Subject: Official School Year 05-06 Carnal Scream Thread

The new academic year is either upon us or approaching very quickly (classes start next Mon. for me) Freshmen are moving into the dorms; Elementary students are crowding the aisles of Wal-Mart all looking for that perfect binder with some sort of cartoon on it; If you listen closely...you can hear a thousand teachers scream.

So go on, have at it! You know you want to...let out that carnal scream. Whether it be for terror (yes you students and teacher) or joy (I'm talking to you, moms) or even if you are having a horrid time at work and just want to let it out. Just scream, let it all out! I'll start...

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! I DON'T WANNA GO BACK!!!!!!!! AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

[> [> [> Multiplication... -- C, 17:27:33 08/22/05 Mon [1]

I teach 4th grade and do this lesson with my kids. Depending on the teacher he has, start with one of those multiplication fact grids of either up to 10x10 or 12 x 12.

Get a box of crayons out and start to talk about which facts are really easy.

1. Half the chart is a reflection of the first half, so color in the right half triangle black.

2. Which rows are easy? Talk about which parts are simple and color each set of facts in a different color.
Maybe...1s, blue, 2s are doubles and are simple, green, fives are a piece of cake--red, tens are a cinch--yellow, elevens have a pattern--pink, etc.

Have your son narrow the chart down and talk about which facts he has tricks for. Eventually, there are very few white spaces left---If you do this with a 10x10 chart, I think there ends up being 13 spaces left (I call them the Unlucky 13 and make it a challenge to my kids to learn them---I make it sound like bank robber types with wanted posters!)

Make a key below the chart as a reminder of which trick goes with which color.

Find ways to practice those last few that weren't colored in. I think they end up being...6x8, 3x8, 6x7, etc.

I think "Multiplication Facts" can be daunting. But kids know a LOT of math tricks. They just get intimidated by the pressure of memorization.

Another thing I would suggest is having a stack of flash cards, and go through them every day for five minutes....review ones in the "learned" stack and hit the ones in the "Not yet" stack every day.

[> [> [> [> Thanx, bunches and lots!!! His is in 4th grade, so I'm sure you'll have tons of tricks for me, & not just for math. They start learning facts with 7X8, they say because it is the hardest to learn, then add a new fact each week--in a random order(to me anyway). I have him write the fact(including the division side) each day, & ask them at random when I think of it(like at the bus stop). -- Texasbrat, 07:35:36 08/23/05 Tue [1]

[> [> Welcome TexasBrat! Inside for a fun way to remember the 9-times table. My dad taught me this when I was a kid, but it was also in a movie called "Stand and Deliver" (a great math/teacher movie btw) Whenever I was totally bummed out about calculus, I used to watch this` -- Canrane -- I hope I get this right or they'll change their mind about letting me graduate with a math degree ;), 16:58:31 08/26/05 Fri [1]

Okay, so you hold your hands out in front of you with your fingers extended. To figure out, say, 9 x 3 what you do is, starting from the left, count three fingers to the right and fold down the 3rd finger. The remaining fingers to the left of the folded down finger are the 10's digits and the ones to the right of the folded finger are the one's digits. (If there are no more fingers to the right/left of the folded finger...we have zero in the 10's/1's place)

In our example of 9 x 3, we have 2 fingers on the left of the folded finger and 7 fingers on the right. So 3 x 9 = 27.

You can do that with any number under 10. Cool, huh?

if you remember, I'm quite facinating with homeschooling... (well and other things related to it - I finally gave in and got "The Well Educated Mind" which is a self education guide to the great books written by the daughter of the pair who wrote "The Well-Trained Mind"

I was just curious about what "method" of homeschool you use, or if you had any favorite books or websites on homeschooling you think are particullary good or useful?

Its once again my random obsession...

well I should be off... to my Don Quixote reading and to study my Latin vocab!!

[> [> [> In general I buy complete curriculums and FOLLOW THEM. LOL! My favorites are A Beka and Bob Jones. I also (in the last couple of years) have used some video courses for my middle daughter. These work well but you have to stay on top of it AND make sure your child is participating. You still have to grade everything and answer any questions your child has, etc. but you don't have to TEACH it. It has worked well when I've used it for my middle daughter but I don't believe will be something I can use for my youngest or for Child O Mine. It's not for everyone. Here's a couple of sites you might find interesting. I use resources from the bottom one from time to time:

MOST of my help and information come from homeschooling friends and my local homeschooling group.

[> [> [> [> I like A beka, too. Luoodles, what are your feelings on ABeka's math? Inside please............. -- Texasbrat, 12:49:09 08/23/05 Tue [1]

A Beka is great at teaching reading. My oldest two attended private schools that used Abeka, and have learned to read well, as a result. They attended during Pre-K thru 2nd grade. We moved after that, and they are now in public school, and doing well.

Currently, our public school is using Saxon Math in addition to Scott Forseman math(state approved). The PTO purchases it, and it seems to be working. The kids are learning the math concepts.

seem to generally like Saxon (its recommended in "The Well-Trained Child" - especially in the elementary boards... The highschool boards are generally a little more divided, at the moment they all really like this one series that you can get dvd's with (which is quite natural of a "want" when getting to higher level math, LOL)

[> [> [> [> [> Hi Tex! INSIDE>>> -- Luoodles, 23:25:53 08/23/05 Tue [1]

I've heard good things about Saxon, but have not used it personally. We are switching from A Beka math this year to Bob Jones. A Beka is a GREAT curriculum but it tends to beat a dead horse so to speak. It makes for a very long school day and after teaching a concept goes a bit too much into what I would call "busy work." On the other hand, when they DO move on, the kids are SOLID on what they've learned (so am I! LOL!) As far as reading... I've been doing this for 9 years now and I would not use any other program to teach phonics/reading. IMO A Beka is the BEST in this catagory. Also their English (and mostly their curriculum across the board) is advanced compared to other curriculums I've looked at. If your kid can make it thru A Beka, they can make it thru ANYTHING. My middle child is going into 8th grade this year. She is a grade ahead for her age. She has consitently scored well above average and post high school the last 2 years (acording to "Standford 10" testing.) I think it's because of the A Beka curriculum we've followed all these years. Still, the work load is HEAVY w/ these folks even w/ me paring it down. Also their prices (which have always been high) are getting down right rediculous.

Oh.. and yes. LOL! I used the math DVD's the last 2 years for her. Otherwise I'd be hanging from a rafter somewhere!

[> [> [> [> [> [> In the "Well-Trained Mind" they said that Abeka is designed for a whole classroom of kids, and as such has a lot of busy work - they recommended folks just select which portions to do, rather than trying to fit it all in... -- Aria, 12:41:46 08/24/05 Wed [1]

[> [> [> [> [> [> [> Yes. That's what we do. It would be insane to try to do every single problem, etc. w/ them. The requirements alone are enough. They actually have color coded problems so you know which are optional. But EVEN WITH THAT... they ask for a LOT. I'm talking gradable stuff here. It's not for the faint of heart! LOL! GREAT curriculum though. -- Luoodles who just bought the last of her books today... at the DOLLAR STORE! LOLOLOL!!!! They've got great little schedule books, etc., 10:44:45 08/25/05 Thu [1]
