Subject: Back at Home

Well...I finished freshman year and I'm in the process of moving back home. I walked in the door and the first thing I did was hook up my TV (WITH CABLE!) and watched JAG haha.

Any tips on how to move my stuff back into my room? I've been staring at boxes with my mouth hanging open for the past few hours...

[> My advice to you? Well you may or may not like it but I never truly unpacked because I would only have to repack everything again in what seems like so little time. But if you are one of those people who can't stand to have boxes lying around the house then C's idea would be my next suggestion. Gosh the moving is truly something about dorm life I don't miss! -- Sara, 16:01:59 05/28/05 Sat [1]

[> [> LOL! I must concurr. Why bother? If cardboard boxes bother you, you can spruce them up by using them as end-tables/seats. A pillowcase spread like so, a bed sheet like this...and voila! Insta-furniture ;) -- Canrane, 19:13:55 05/28/05 Sat [1]

[> Apparently I'm too verbose for this board! Inside... -- Nadja / Jennie, 19:27:45 05/28/05 Sat [1]

I moved out of my parent's house nearly 4 years ago, and I finally just now got all of my stuff out of boxes and into my house. I lived in an apartment for a year, moved back home for 4 months, lived with friends for 5 months, moved back home/wandered aimlessly/was somewhat homelss/lived with a different friend for 3 months, then finally moved into the house I'm at now almost a year go and will probably be here for another year. So I have a lot of experience with moving; and I've never lived in a dorm, so we're talking all furniture, all clothes, all books, all electronics... The thought of having to move again next year makes me want to cry. Though I will hopefully be moving to Hawaii, so that cheers me up again! But I wouldn't even try to unpack everything if you're just going to head back to the dorms again in a few months. I totally agree with Canrane about making the boxes into chairs. Then one day, if you find that you're really bored, you can unpack more stuff and maybe get rid of some stuff you don't need. Though that never helped me. I have such an incredibly large amount of stuff, people are amazed that I moved so much. What they don't realize is that I usually had my stuff spread throughout 3 houses. LOL But not anymore! It's finally all here with me in one house!

[> [> Hee hee you guys are the best. I was able to throw a lot of still-packed boxes into my basement and fully plan on leaving them there until September. Howevvvvver...I didnt pack very well. I didn't have long to do (I waited until the very last minute because I'm just cool like that) so I threw stuff into boxes as I found it laying on my floor. This means my clothes, dvds, jewlery, makeup, and shoes are dispersed throughout random boxes that I guess I now have to go through. I will most CERTAINLY do a more efficient job of packing next year!!! -- Suze, 00:38:57 05/29/05 Sun [1]

[> [> [> Next year you'll be more experienced! I always ended up having "duplicate" stuff that I didn't need once I came home in the summer anyway, so most of the boxes would go straight to the basement until August when it was time to move back again. By your senior year, you'll be a pro at moving/packing efficiently! -- AmandaW, 09:42:12 05/29/05 Sun [1]

[> [> [> [> I agree with Amanda. You seem to move less stuff each year, because you lean what to move and what to discard. Our Daughter left much of her stuff in boxes in the garage/attic over the summer. Other stuff that would not survive the heat of the garage was piled in her room. -- PB, congrats for completing your first year!, 12:23:33 05/29/05 Sun [1]

[> it doesn't work - the stuff won't fit back in the room - so best bet is to leave the boxes in the basement, lol - well at least thats what happened to me, lol (and I'm actually in the process of going through all that stuff from college that's been down there a year now - so that I'll have an easier time moving out the first of the year - because there are things I managed to acquire that I don't need - but there are a lot of things down there that I will need again... -- Aria, 23:16:28 05/29/05 Sun [1]

[> [> I understand completely what happened to you, Aria! When I returned back from college after the first year, I seemed to accumulate a whole lot more than I went down with. That made for one messy messy messy room in my parents' house. Maybe more than one. LOL! -- Sara--"Because I'm...normal!", 15:47:20 05/30/05 Mon [1]

[> I've been reading this thread for the past few days trying to remember what I did with my stuff, because I never had to pack, store, and unpack my things. Then I remembered that I never went home with all my stuff for the summer. My parents moved out of state and the first year I stored things in the dorm attic, then after that I moved into a house and didn't move out until I finished grad school. I've always just gone home for the summer with a suitcase! -- C, 17:36:57 05/30/05 Mon [1]

[> [> Unfortunately, dorm storage at Harvard is only for kids who live more than 150 miles away (which I guess makes sense considering that most of the kids DO live far away). I was able to store my futon under my friends name, but everything else had to come home with me. In addition, I ended up with a whole trunkload of things that belong to my friends which were too valuable/breakable for them to put in storage. Those have yet to make it out of the car. My backseat has also been taken over by this weird shower-stand THING that is in 4 parts that my future roommate found in the trash that she absolutely HAD to have. Theres a good chance those boxes will stay in my trunk all summer haha. Thanks so much guys, you're all a great help!!! -- Suze, 18:11:13 05/30/05 Mon [1]

[> [> [> Well at least there is SOME storage then - where I went to school, even the kids who lived way on the West Coast couldn't even store anything... there just was no storage at all... -- Aria, 19:10:22 05/30/05 Mon [1]

[> [> [> [> Amen, sister! When I lived in dorm, you had to take everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, with you when you left your room for the summer. Even if you were coming back to the same room the following year. You wouldn't believe the nice things that people just threw away because they didn't have room in their cars or didn't want to bother taking it back with them. There were some nice finds there! Roomie and I had to leave our futon with a couple of friends who had a house off campus while we were away that first summer. -- Sara, 13:08:11 05/31/05 Tue [1]

[> [> [> [> [> Same here. There was absolutely no storage available and everything had to go for the summer even if you were coming back to the exact same spot the next year. Oh well--luckily for me, my roomie had most of the big furniture! -- AmandaW (I used to start packing things in stages and gradually clear out everything the last couple of months), 20:08:43 05/31/05 Tue [1]

[> [> [> [> [> [> Wow...that sucks. Not having storage! Another rule that really bothers some of my friends is the one where they have to be out within 24 hours of their last exam. Usually they aren't too strict about it, but last term my friend had it enforced on him...not pretty -- Canrane, 10:40:18 06/01/05 Wed [1]

[> [> [> [> [> [> [> Wow! 24 hours?! That's pushing it. We always had until about two days after to be completely moved out, but before we moved we had to be checked out by an RA which involved having everything out, clean, and fridge defrosted, etc. We had to have everything out of our rooms before our check out time and after we had 15 minutes to get ourselves out physically from the dorm. I haven't a clue why, but they enforced that rule. It feels a bit like being kicked in the butt out onto the street. -- Sara, 12:09:57 06/01/05 Wed [1]

[> [> [> [> [> [> [> ours was just based on the end of exams... however you could end up with an exam that day (latest one on that day being the make up/conflict slot from 1-3) and have tohave everything out of the dorm room and checked out by your RA by 5:00... -- Aria, 13:18:13 06/01/05 Wed [1]
