Suzy,
As your daughter is only 11, I feel that you should still have the say in how your daughter wears her hair. Since she is not willing to let you cut it short, you should take her and allow her to think that you are just having her hair trimmed, make sure that the stylist understands that after her hair is washed and sectioned off, to just start cutting it at her neck line...once the haircut is started, there will be no turning back.
It may be somewhat traumatic for her at first, but you know it will look good, and she will get used to the new length.
I live in the Atlanta area, if you happen to also, I would be glad to cut her hair for you.

My mother pulled this stunt with me as a teenager, and I never forgave her for it. To this very day, and I am in my mid 40's, I don't trust hairdressers and I HATE having my hair cut. All due to my mother's sneakiness. Give your daughter a break.

my mom did the same to me when i was young..i hated it.she took to me the beauty salon and told me that she was getting my hair trimmed where as she had already told the stylist to cut my hair really short.at the end of it i had hair like a boy-a boy cut.please dont do this to your daughter.

i agree with ted..you should have a say in how your daughter wears her hair as she is still young.i say you take her to the salon and get it cut short-a boy cut maybe..she will get over it eventually.

Yes I do keep my hair very short .By the way my daughter at first hate her very short boyish haircut but now my daughter got used now.My daughter do not mind getting her haircut every 3 weeks from now on.

What is the problem with her long hair? Does she not take care of it, does it look messy, or do you think she would look better in a shorter hair style? Take her to a salon and let her talk to the hairdresser, let them deceide the final hairstyle for your daughter. She is 11 years old,my daughter has made her hair style choices since she was 9.
Hair will grow back, color will wash out / get cut out, this is not a big deal, it isn't a tatoo, let her be her own person and let got of the leash a little.

My two daughters age 5 and 7 do not need very long hair any more so I take my daughters to the barbershop to cut off their very long hair very short. Now my daughters has very short boyish hair it easy to care of their their hair when it is very short it cut on washing and brush their hair from now on I take My daughters to the barbershop for very short haircuts forever

Honey, if your daughter wants to keep her hair long, you let her... A womans hair is her glory. ive had long hair all my life and when i cut it short i cried for 2 weeks. as long as the childs hair is out of her eyes and her hair looks healthy and is maintained there is no reeason for you wanting to whack it off, that is unless you dont want to take care of your daughters hair

Hi Susan,
I to have a daughter with waist length hair and she is a little older than your daughter. I feel that you should have the say in how your daughter wears her hair. I know it would be less maintainence for you. I also been trying to get my daughter to cut her hair at least to her shoulders and I'm having a hard time. I can always cut her hair shorter at a another time. I also cut hair for a living with over 15 years experience. She knows I can cut her hair in a nice style. Reciently I started to show her pics of various different short style bobs ranging from the lengths of shoulder to chin lengths. I'm trying to get her interest in cutting her hair short maybe if she sees a pic of a style she likes maybe she would agree to cut her hair. As for you Susan I suggest you try showing your daughter some pics of different short bob styles and try to get her interest in cutting her hair short. I think just cutting her hair at this time would make you and look like the bad guy. I think your daughter would cut her hair if she saw a pic of a style she really liked. I told my daughter that her very short boyish haircut is here stay forever.Every 2 or 3 weeks I will take my 12 year old daughter to the barber shop for trims to keep her very short boyish hair in shape

Suzy, You are the parent and make the decisions, but do not deceive her or you will lose trust.Simply state what will take place just beforehand to avoid a battle and a lot of worrying for her. Assure her that it will be easier to care for and look updated like "fill in the blank". (Many celebrities have recently gotten pixie haircuts.) Tell her that you have decided and it is not up for discussion. She may not be happy about it, but that's life and this will be a lesson in adjustment and accepting change, which everyone needs to learn. Don't cave in and spoil your daughter. She might even end up liking the hairstyle. In our household, the same haircut guidelines apply to boys and girls: off the neck, off the ears, and off the face. At that point it becomes flexible. One of My cousin ten years ago, when she was about 7 years old use to have waste lenth hair before it was cut really short and she didn't like a first but after a while she got use to it. Her mom told the stylist to cut really short and she start clippeing on the back and sides and cut 2-3 inches short on top with the scissors.

I'm sorry, but you people are nuts! Yes, she may be her mother, and, yes, the daughter may only be 11 years old - but the child still has free will! It may not seem like much of a right to an adult, but children have the freedom of opinion as well. I believe what Ted suggested and those other mothers did was wrong! Yes, I had boyishly short hair in Kindergarten and I am about to get it cut that short or shorter again in the next week. My parents tried to PERSUADE me to keep it long. But in the end, I still went with what -I- thought was best. I haven't regretted my decisions yet. What you people are doing by forcing your daughters or sons to get hairstyles of your choice is limiting their freedom of expression! If a girl loves long hair, why take that love away? If a boy wants a little bit longer hair than is normal, why take that dream away? Don't force your kids to do stuff - persuade them instead. Most of my life lately has been nothing but my dad forcing his opinion on me and it made me quite a miserable person to hang around with at school. Now, I've moved out from his house and moved back in with my mom. I'm making decisions for myself again - and I'm a much more enjoyable, happy, and self-confident person. And choosing my own hairstyle(s) is one of those better decisions I've made in the past few months.

I made my choice that my 12 year old daughter will forced cut her very long hair very short like a boy I love very short haircut on my daughter from now my 12 year old daughter will her haircut from the barber shop to keep shape her very short hair . By the way my 12 year old daughter is is not allowed grow her very long hair back again she will keep very short haircut from now on.

After stern attempts to get her to take care of her hair, she generally refused. By spring it was below her shoulders and looked horrible. In May I told her if she did not improve on this that I would give her a boys cut for the summer. No change, so After the last day of school, dressed as a girl(in a short dress) I took her to a barber shop. She was given a boys crew cut. For the rest of the summer she looked like a boy, getting trimmed every 2 weeks.

I am 18 , I have always had a short , smart slicked haircut. When I was growing up it was mandatory now I have it from choice.
It has instilled discipline in me and i,m proud of what I see when I look in the mirror. I am intereseted to hear the views of other people my age . I know some guys suffer with low self-esteem , can I say to those who do that getting a good haircut is one way to begin to rectify that.
If anyone would like to talk about this and I can help I would be happy to do so.

My worst haircut came about as a result of a fight. I was at a party with my boyfriend when this drunk skank started flirting with him. I told her to leave him alone, and she slapped me! I slapped her back, and the fight was on! When it was over I was left with a black eye, a fat lip, and a bruised and swollen face. But the worst part was that the skank had rubbed her chewing gum all in my hair! My boyfriend took me to the emergency room, and after they treated my injuries they had to cut my hair off with men's clippers. They shaved it just like a boy! I think about a quarter inch the nurse said. It was so humiliating. The other girl didn't even get a scratch!

Hi! Just hope you don't wake up to what I did two weeks ago. I had thick, healthy sholder length hair, basically one length (hence my email address....). My boyfriend came home from his monthly night out with the guys (which I fully supported!). Unfortunately, this time, they were celebrating the promotion of one of the guys and my guy got rather drunk. His story is when he come home, he saw me and thought I would look good with a style like the waitress at the restaurant had. So he took it upon himself to snip away. I am a heavy sleeper and had no clue. as soon as I woke up, I could feel the difference. Well, thank goodness for salons that are open on Sunday and they saved what they could. I currently have two inches on top with a buzzed neck and around the ears. And I hate it!!!
My guy keeps saying he is sorry, and i know he is, but he ain't getting any until the hair on my neck is at least three inches long!

Hey my story begins about three weeks ago i was invited to me friends house to stay over as his parents were out of town for the weekend, you can imagine the trouble four 18 year olds can get up to. well it was about 2.30 in the morning and we were going to put a little plan into action, we were going to put sleeping pills in our friends josh's beer to make him fall asleep then do stuff to his hair. then came the twist i fell asleep the bastards put the sleeping pills into my beer and about an hour later i wake up duct taped to joshs weighlifting bench the bastards had dyed my hair bleach blonde, so then while i was awake the took the clippers and buzzed my head a number three all over and said that was it . but josh had a better idea he took the guard off the clippers and sahved me hair to a number zero on the sides. i llook so naked with me hair like this.

I had a forced haircut. My dad took me into the bathroom and told me he was tired of my hair not being kept neat. So, he took out his clippers and buzzed the back of my head all the way up to my crown with a #1 guard and he did the sides the same way. The top was like 4 inches long he kept that lengh. Every week I would have to go for my buzz cut to keep it fresh.
