In reply to: Marion 's message, "Hatch almost over" on 15:15:12 07/30/02 Tue

I'm pretty much done for the year too. I just hatched out 96 Quail out of 96 eggs. All hatched with no problems. wait, I take that back. I had one hatch and couldn't stand. It was doing the splits so I did what any good mama chick would do. I made it some hobbles so it would keep it's legs together until it could walk on it's own. It worked. Chick is fine and no side effects from being hobbled. Hey Marion, Next time you have a chick that cracks it's egg but just can't seem to get out, go ahead and open the top off of it and gently free it's head from under it's wing. Be careful not to pull the chick out of the shell because it's navel is still attached and you could break a blood vessel and it wil bleed to death. Just move it's head from under it's wing and let it do the rest in the hatcher. Make sure it has plenty of humidity so it doesn't stick to the shell. I learned a trick from Brenda with a spray bottle. once you open the egg for the chick and remove it's head from under it's wing, give it a spray of water from the spray bottle before putting it back in the hatcher. It will pop out in no time. I've done it several times with pretty good success. You have nothing to loose because the chick can't get out anyway so help it out a little. Just be very gentle and let it do the rest in the bator. So what else are you going to hatch this year? I was thinking of maybe trying out some peafowl eggs. I haven't done that yet. By the way. You said you have a little giant Styrofoam bator, right? If you have the money, Crystal is selling all of her Sportsman cabinet bators on the FowlAround. She's asking $250.00 for each. Might be worth the investment. I tell ya, I wouldn't trade mine for nothing. I love it. they are so acurate and easy to operate. Hers have the clear acrylic doors, hatcher and three levels of racks for eggs. Beats the heck out of the Styro's by a long shot and your hatch rate will be way up there.. Might be something to think about. Write me back. Good seeing you on here again. Talk to ya soon.
