Hi there Sandy,

Congrats on the hobbles, glad it worked. Along those lines, I have a chick who seems to have its legs twisted inward and has crooked toes. It seems to be getting a bit better on its own. Last hatch I had a keet with crooked toes and they healed by themselves. I don't know if you remember my last hatch on FowlAround. I helped one chick out of a similar situation, it had cracked the shell all around and I helped it out. It had horribly splayed legs and I tried to fix with the tape/bandaid therapy. I named her Molly. She lasted about a week, but during that time, she scooted around on her butt, then waddled a bit and finally went. It was very very hard on me so I decided I couldn't help another one out. It was equally hard on me to not do anything with these 2. I'm glad to hear you had great success with helping them out, maybe I will try that next time.

Thanks for the info on Crystal's sportsman bators. But I'm one of those "Arkansas people who have no money", sorry, that hit a nerve over there. Seriously, though, I am out of work since 9/11 (I'm a chemical engineer who works out of my house via computer and the internet for a worldwide company - see the nerve?) I am going to buy an automatic turner next time.

This hatch started out bad, so I'm not surprised by the results. We had so many power outages the first week, I was going to throw in the towel, but decided to see what happens. 11 hatched (3 bantams, 4 blacks, 4 yellows) and 3 of them have died. 2 of them couldn't keep their eyes open even though I dabbed them with warm damp cotton balls and used Terramycin eye ointment. The 3rd was just weak. Is it normal for a chick who cannot keep eyes open to die? Just curious, although it could be because they couldn't find the water and food with their eyes closed.

Future hatches? Well.... next week one of my broody hens' eggs are due, she has 13 under her and then the following week another one's are due. Amazing thing is that these are black australorps and I've been told they do not go broody, guess someone didn't tell them, lol. I really want some peacocks and they're so expensive, I might have to try to hatch some on my own. I love their cries, I know I'm strange. I want ducks and more guineas, you can never have too many guineas (at least I don't think so-I have 3 adults and 9 keets), maybe geese would be good, of course I have to figure out if a kiddie pool is good enough for ducks and geese.

Thanks for all your kind help,
Marion
