You and I- Full Engagement revised
ATTENTION PLEASE!! READ EVERYTHING at the beginning of this fanfic, or you will not understand anything.

This story includes action, court room drama, emotional obstacles, and, since it takes place in season 2, a Harm/Mac, Bud/Harriet shipper story. It takes place in Full Engagement, and begins when Harm and Mac are walking back to the plane "Sarah".
This fanfic does not exactly portray Singer as a little angel, so if you don't like that, stop reading now. Or just skip over some of it. I put alot into this... I hope people read it.
For my convenience, Silent Service happened BEFORE Full Engagement. Much of JAG history has been changed.

Disclaimer: JAG and all of it's characters are property of CBS productions, Paramount Pictures, Donald P. Bellasario, etc. Maria Smyth, Karen and Jessica Andersone, and several unimportant doctors etc are my creations. This story IS original, except it had a JAG-written prompt, and all that you see here was written by me. "Because You Loved Me" belongs to Celine Dion and some other people involved with her. This fanfic was written strictly for entertainment purposes. No profit is being made from it and no copyright infringement is intended.

**NOTE: Dates are probably not really the days they say they were, but it's not 1997 anymore so I can't check em. Just go with it.**

I wish to thank my parents for answering many questions that I could not ask fellow JAG fans. Thanks to anyone who helped me to edit this fanfic, you know who you are. Also thanks to Exleygirl, Kat, and whoever I'm forgetting for answering some questions that I had. Lastly, I want to thank MichelleB for inspiring me to write a longer fanfic. That's right Michelle, I'm talking to you.

Feedback is much appreciated, though I do ask that you not make rude or negative comments. Suggestions to better my writing skills are always welcome as I wish to be a writer when I am older.

Oh and I'm not going to repeat this for all of the parts for those of you who are reading the parts, so just try to remember it. LOL!

Enjoy!

A cave in the Appalachian mountains

Harm looked at Mac's face. He was very concerned. "Are you okay?" he asked her.

"I think so," she replied. "Look, I'm sorry for... for... for the way I was acting before." Mac was referring to pretty much everything. How weak she had been, how scared, and how she had killed that man.

"Oh Mac... it's okay... you had every right to act as you did," Harm said sincerely. Harm put his hand on her shoulder and turned her towards him. He wanted her to look at him, but instead she was becoming very interested in her fingernail. "Mac listen to me," he said firmly. Reluctantly Mac looked up into his eyes. "That man deserved to die. He was a terrible person," Harm told her.

"He didn't deserve to die," Mac said softly. "He deserved... well... I don't really know." It was strange that Mac could not think of an appropriate punishment for the man, since she was a lawyer and was used to deciding on a suggested sentence.

"But Mac... he..." Harm started but Mac interrupted him.

"I know what he did!" Mac's brisk voice rang though the silent night. Then she softened at the look on Harm's face. "You've been worried about me haven't you?"

"Yes Mac. I am more worried about you than I ever have been before," Harm replied. Mac could tell he was telling the truth. “I understand if you never want to fly with me again," Harm said dejectedly. "This was supposed to be a fun time for us."

"Harm it's okay. It wasn't your fault," Mac reassured him.

By this time they had reached the clearing. "Here...get in," Harm indicated a seat in the plane. Mac laughed and indicated her leg. "Oh.. right," Harm said sheepishly. He helped her to the plane and gave her a boost up. "Wait there while I fix the gas line."

"Okay." Mac sounded very weak. Harm hoped she would be okay.
*****
The gas line was fixed. 'Sarah' was ready to go. Harm hopped into the plane with Mac.
"Ready?" he asked.

"Yeah..." Mac replied. Just then a man darted out from the woods.

"GET DOWN!!" Harm screamed. He pulled out the gun he had taken from the man earlier. They were about to take off, but he couldn't risk it. He couldn't risk her. Harm aimed carefully and shot the man. Just that second, the plane lifted off the ground.

Airfield parking lot
Somewhere near Washington

They were near Harm's car. Harm was carrying Mac because when she tried to limp she collapsed. He had left his car at the airfield not knowing that he was going to be gone so long. He carefully set Mac down in the passenger side. "Couldn't we get food before we go?" Mac was half kidding, half serious.

"Nope," Harm replied. "You're goin to the hospital right away."

"Darn," Mac joked. They rode the rest of the way in silence, each thinking about what had happened. As soon as they pulled into a parking space at the hospital, Harm jumped out of the car and picked Mac up again from her side. She rested her head on his chest as he carried her through the crowded parking lot. He had taken such good care of her. He had saved her life... who knows how many times! Now he was carrying her to the hospital.

They must've looked awfully strange walking into the hospital, because they attracted looks from nearly everyone inside. Gently, Harm sat Mac down in a chair. "Just wait here while I check you in okay?" Harm whispered.

"Okay.." she replied meekly. Harm walked up to the inpatient desk.

"Can I help you?" asked the woman at the desk.

"Yes," Harm said. "I need to check in my best friend." He indicated Mac.

"Your friend... goodness I thought she was your wife!!" exclaimed the receptionist.

'His wife??' Harm thought. 'I wish!' Sometimes he just wanted to risk it all and tell her he loved her. But what if she did not love him the way he loved her? He just couldn't handle it.

"And what is your friend's name?" asked the receptionist.

"Major Sarah Mackenzie. S-A-R-A-H M-A-C-K-E-N-Z-I-E."

"And yours?" she prompted.

"Harmon Rabb."

"What is Sarah here for?" asked the woman.

"She's got an infected gunshot wound," Harm replied solemnly.

"Oh my!!" exclaimed the receptionist. "We'll get a doctor right away."

Harm was very glad that Mac would be treated immediately. "Thank you."

"It's my job!"

Harm headed back towards Mac. He sat in the seat next to her. "How are you doing?"

"Hasn't gotten any worse if that's what you're asking," Mac said weakly. "I just want to sleep."

"I know you do..... they're getting a doctor right away. Soon we'll have you a real bed to lie down on. Well... as real as you can call a hospital bed."

"Sure beats the ground," Mac commented. "Harm I want you to stay with me here." Harm was surprised. Of course he wanted to stay with her, but he had expected she'd want to show him what a big tough Marine she was.... maybe Sarah Mackenzie wasn't as tough as she seemed. Harm kind of liked this new side of her.

"I'll arrange something," Harm promised.

"Oh thank you Harm!!" Mac sighed resting her head on Harm's shoulder. "Thank you for all that you've done for me."

"No problem Mac," Harm replied. "Besides, now you owe me!"

"Harmon Rabb you always..." Mac was interrupted by the arrival of a doctor.

"We have a room open now if you'd like to come back," he said. "Sorry, but we're out of wheelchairs at the moment."

"I'll carry her," Harm picked Mac up again, careful not to hurt her. He loved her so much...

"Thanks Harm," Mac whispered.

"Again, no prob'm."

When the doctor finally lead them into a room, Harm deposited Mac onto the bed in the center of the room. Then he sat down on the chair next to the bed, still holding Mac's hand. He looked at the doctor. "If it's okay I'd like to stay with her."

"Would you be a spouse?" the doctor asked.

'Second time that's happened.' Harm thought. "Best friends," Harm and Mac said together.

"I see," the doctor smiled as if he knew something about them that they didn't know. "I guess it's okay."
***********************************************************************
Later that day
Same place

Harm sat next to Mac. She gripped his hand. They had just found out that Mac was going to have to have surgery on her leg. They were operating first thing in the morning. After much persuasion from Harm and Mac, all of the doctors had agreed to let Harm stay with Mac during her surgery. Everyone could see how great their friendship was. Harm looked at Mac. He could not read her expression. "Mac?" he said softly.

"Yes?" she replied, her face still blank.

"Are you okay?"

"Well... to tell you the truth, I'm a little scared... but don't tell the Admiral," she replied with a hint of a smile.

"It will be okay," Harm reassured her.

"I sure hope so."

Harm was worried. What if something happened during Mac's surgery? He didn't know what could happen, but he didn't want anything at all to happen. He knew... he knew he loved her. He knew he could never live without her. If something happened her... he just didn't want to think about it.

"Harm?" Mac's voice awaked Harm from his thoughts. "Can I ask you something?"

"Sure Mac, anything."

"Could you go out and get me a beltway burger or something? This food is awful even when you haven't eaten in 2 days," she requested. Mac poked at something on her platter.

Harm laughed. "Certainly. Will you be okay while I'm gone?"

"I'm a Marine. I will miss you but I'll be fine." Mac looked into Harm's eyes. She saw love and worry there. He loved her? Did he love her like she loved him? "Before you go..." Mac motioned for Harm to come closer. He leaned over her bed. "Take this with you," she said and kissed him on the cheek.

"Tiner!!" called an angry voice. "Where are Mackenzie and Rabb?!" AJ slammed a stack of papers on his desk.

"I don't know sir," Tiner replied calmly in comparison. "I haven't heard from them since yesterday when..." Tiner was interrupted by the phone's ringing. AJ picked it up.

"JAG," he said into the speaker. He stayed on the phone for about ten minutes, every minute of so swearing or saying "What?!".

When he hung up the phone, Tiner said "What was that about sir?"

"Major Mackenzie's in the hospital," AJ announced.

2 hours later
JAG HQ
Falls Church, VA

AJ sank down in his chair. He sighed. He had just been informed that three men had been found dead in the Appalachian mountains. One of his best investigators and lawyers was in the hospital, while the other refused to leave her side. He sighed again. Oh well, maybe he could send Lieutenant Roberts and that new girl, Maria Smyth on the investigation. Apparently one of the men was a Navy Petty Officer, but no one really knew why he was in the woods. Still, even with Lieutenant Roberts and Lieutenant Smyth, he needed Harm and Mac. AJ wondered how Mac got shot in the leg just flying in Harm's plane? That's what they said they'd be doing... They would've had to land..... or crash land.

Interrupting AJ's thoughts, someone knocked on the door. "Enter," he called. Lieutenant Roberts walked in.

"Sir, I'd like to talk to you about something," Bud said.

"What is it Lieutenant?" AJ asked.

"Sir Commander Rabb went out flying with Major Mackenzie yesterday," Bud began. "But he was gone for nearly two days! A stearman can't hold that much fuel.

"What are you getting at Lieutenant?"

"Sir I think... I think the commander and the major had to make a crash landing. I don't think they'd land if they didn't have to. They wouldn't have a reason to... I mean..." Bud remembered how the man at the airport had suspected that Harm and Mac had landed on purpose... for a specific reason... "The relationship between them is strictly professional... they're friends going flying. Over the mountains. If they'd wanted to land, how would they know a place in the mountains to land?"

"They know something," AJ said.

"Sir?"

"Lieutenant three men were shot in the Appalachian mountains very recently. No one knows why they were there or who shot them and why. They were alone. The park ranger is no where to be found. I need you to conduct an investigation considering Harm and Mac as possible suspects," AJ told Bud.

"You want me to head the investigation sir? With all due respect..."

"Roberts Harm and Mac are unavailable. You're the best man for the job," AJ cut Bud off. "Take the new girl, Lieutenant smyth with you. Give her some experience."

"Yes sir!" Bud saluted the Admiral, and left when he heard the Admiral say "Dismissed".
The Admiral wanted him to head an investigation? Him, Bud Roberts? A murder investigation? Wow!

Bud decided to go check the scene out right away. He fished his keys out of his pocket. While finding the right one, he literally bumped into Lieutenant Smyth. "Lieutenant!" he exclaimed. "So sorry! ...Glad I found you though..."

"How come?" she asked picking up some files that she had dropped.

"The Admiral has asked me to take you on a murder investigation. Apparently three men were found dead in the Appalachian mountains, one of them a Navy Petty Officer," Bud informed her. "We have to go check out the scene. Half hour by car."

"Okay!" she replied. "Let me just set these files on my desk." Bud waited while she did that. When she returned, he motioned for her to follow him and headed for the elevator.

"Let's just take my car," Bud suggested. "It's easier."

"That's fine," she said. "Do you have any clue what this might have been about?"

"Not what it's about... but maybe who did it," Bud said looking very unhappy. "Major Mackenzie and Commander Rabb are possible suspects in the murder."

"Wow..." Lieutenant Smyth sighed. "I've never been on a murder investigation! It could be interesting!"

"You act like this is a good thing!" Bud exclaimed. "Don't you care what happens to the Commander and the Major?!"

"Well no offense Lieutenant, but I've never even met them," she told Bud.

"I'm sorry Ma'am, I keep forgetting that you are new... it's just that Commander Rabb and Major Mackenzie are two of the nicest people I've ever met. They're my best friends, and my role models," Bud explained apologetically. "If they're found guilty..."

"They aren't even suspects yet, Lieutenant. Don't worry about it," Lieutenant Smyth told him.

"Right... please call me Bud."

"Okay Bud, call me Maria."

Somewhere in the Appalachian mountains

Bud got out of the car. Maria was not far behind. They headed for the woods. A little ways from the road they found an area surrounded by yellow police tape. A man in military uniform stood by the scene. "Hello," said Bud. "We're investigating this scene. I'm Bud Roberts, from JAG." Bud showed him his ID card.

"Yes Sir!" said the man. "Just duck under the tape."

Bud and Maria did just that. On the ground lay a body. "This man was murdered, and his killer used that knife. Possibly in a close fight or......" Bud thought of what could've happened. No! It couldn't have been...
"Maybe it was self defense though..." Bud pulled a pair of rubber gloves out of his pocket, and yanked a plastic Ziploc bag out of his briefcase. He then took an instant picture of the man with the camera hanging around his neck. After he had finished with the picture, he handed it to Maria, and then retrieved the knife and placed it in the bag. "Fingerprints," he explained. "Speaking of which..." Bud pulled an inkpad out of his briefcase and took the man's fingerprints. Here, write down what we figure out and what we do... let me find a pen..." Bud soon produced a black pen. Bud and Maria repeated the procedure with two other bodies, but never noticed the freshly dug grave in the woods. Soon all of the evidence had been gathered from the bodies. Near the last crime scene, Maria spotted a clearing.

"Bud, we should check out that clearing. If anyone got here by plane..."
Bud gave Maria a look.
"Not necessarily Harm and Mac!" Maria said quickly. "Anyone!"

"You're right..."Bud said reluctantly. They headed for the clearing. Once there, they both stopped and looked around.

"Big," Maria commented looking skyward.

"Very," Bud replied. He took a large step and the next thing he knew he was sitting in a very large hole.

"Here let me give you a hand," Maria said kindly. She extended her hand to him, and he took it. Bud pulled himself up rather quickly.

"What is this big hole anyways?" Bud wondered.

"I don't know," Maria told Bud. "But there's another one right over there." She pointed. The two oval shaped holes were exactly parallel. Bud snapped a picture of the holes with his camera.

"This may be evidence," he explained.

Soon, Bud and Maria had gathered up as much evidence from the crime scene as they could find. "Bud?" asked Maria once they were in Bud's car. "Those holes.... they looked like they might've been left by an airplane..." Bud looked at her getting angry. He didn't want to suspect Harm and Mac! "Not to make any accusations," Maria said quickly. "But we really should interview Commander Rabb and Major Mackenzie."

"You're right," Bud finally agreed. "But there had to be circumstances if it was them. Harm and Mac are not cold blooded killers.

"We'll find out what happened when we interview them," Maria told Bud.

"Can we please do it tomorrow morning?" Bud asked. "I've got another case to work on, and I've also got a date tonight."

"Sure. 0900 tomorrow," Maria agreed.

"Done."

Mac lay on the operating table. Harm was sitting right next to her holding her hand. "Harm?" asked Mac.

"What is it Mac?" Harm answered.

"Thanks for being here for me through all of this," Mac said softly. "You have no idea how grateful I am to you."

"I'm glad to be with you," Harm whispered looking in her eyes. His eyes were full of care and love. "If I couldn't be here with you... I'd go crazy!" Harm just looked at her. Her eyes were full of gratefulness... and... was that.... love? "Mac... Sarah... you have no idea how much I care for you. I don't know what I'd do if anything happened to you."

"Oh Harm... I was afraid to tell you... but... Harm... Harm, I love you," Mac ventured.

"Sarah... I love you too," Harm returned. As they looked into each other's eyes, emotions flowed through the room. Harm reached over to Mac's head. He ran his fingers through her hair. Mac still clasped Harm's other hand in hers. Mac wanted to tell him how much she loved him, but no words could express the depth of her emotion. Harm felt the same thing.

"Harm... I want to tell you... to show you... how much I love you... and when I get out of this place, I am going to do just that," she whispered. Harm begun to speak, but at that moment, the doctor walked in, interrupting their conversation. He stopped his sentence immediately.

"Hello," said the doctor. "We're going to start preparations in about two minutes here..." Mac squeezed Harm's hand and he gave her a small squeeze back. She smiled weakly.

"I'll be here the whole time," Harm reassured her. Her smile brightened. At that moment the doctor brought a mask to them. He placed it over Mac's face, and in seconds she was asleep.

Bud's office

"Hey Bud, are you ready to go?" asked Maria walking into the small office.

"Yeah just let me finish up..." Bud shuffled with some papers and scribbled something on a notepad. "Okay, I'm ready."

"We have a thirty minute drive ahead of us," Maria commented.

"Plenty of time to do work though," Bud replied.

"I'll drive then," Maria said. "We'll just take my car."

"Perfect," Bud agreed. They hurried through the busy office to the parking lot. They found Maria's car easily. It had to be the brightest thing in Virginia! Neon green! They got in and drove off. The whole way to the hospital, Bud worked, and Maria talked. When they arrived, they parked in the "inpatient visitors lot". (Not to be confused with the Impatient visitors lot. LOL!)

"Do you have some paper?" joked Maria, as Bud exited the car with a two foot stack of paper.

"Ha ha," Bud said dryly.

"Let me help you," Maria offered. She took a stack of papers from him. They walked into the hospital. Bud placed his stack of paper on the counter. Maria followed suit.

"Can I help you?" asked the receptionist.

"Um... yes..." Bud replied, shuffling through some papers. "We're with JAG. We need to question a patient and her visitor." Bud handed the woman several sheets of paper.

"Sarah Mackenzie..." the receptionist muttered looking at a paper. She typed something into her computer.

"I'm afraid you can't see them now," she said looking up. "Major Mackenzie's in surgery. Her visitor is with her. Some relationship those two have."

"Relation..... wait, surgery?!" Bud exclaimed. "What... is she okay?"

"Just fine," the receptionist replied. "Just getting her leg fixed up."

"When can we see them?" Maria piped up.

"In about....... two hours," she replied.

"We can just wait here then..." Maria decided. She turned to Bud. "God knows you have enough to work on!" Bud and Maria picked up the papers and sat in the waiting area.

"Relationship?" Bud whispered to Maria. "Harm and Mac have never dated. They're strictly friends."

"Whatever happened must've been amazing," Maria whispered back.

"Maria?" Bud said very very quietly. "I know. They were there."

The Admiral's office

A man walked into AJ's office. AJ looked up into the face of a man. He already did not like the man. He was twenty minutes late, and just standing there grinning.

"Commander Mic Brumby, reporting his order," said the man proudly.

"Brumby," AJ stared at him. "You're late."

"Sorry sir, flight delay," replied the Australian.

"Yes well, you'll need to get busy. Right now I'm missing two officers. I'll have someone show you your new office and you can get settled in," AJ said forgiving Brumby for his tardiness. AJ called Tiner into his office. "Tiner, show Commander Brumby his new office. Oh and show him around the building too."

"Aye aye sir!" Tiner replied promptly.

"Dismissed," AJ commanded. With that the two men left his office.

Once outside the office, Mic and Tiner begun to talk.

"Commander Burnby, pleased to meet you, Sir," said Tiner.

"You too... uh... Tiner......" Mic replied. "And by the way, it's Brumby." There was a bit of an edge on his voice with the last sentence. Mic Brumby was thinking about his ex-girlfriend. She had been a United States Marine. They had met when she had a temporary duty assignment in Australia. The relationship had ended when she transferred to a new JAG office. He tried to think of which one it had been, but nothing came. Mic never really knew why she had ended the relationship. He just knew that her last words to him had been "Later Bug-me." Sarah had been her name. Sarah Mackenzie. In Mic's opinion, she was a beautiful woman.

Suddenly Mic was jerked from his thoughts by a voice. "This is your office sir," said Tiner.

"Thank you," Mic said to Tiner putting his briefcase down. "Now show me the rest." They walked to a door.

"This is Major Mackenzie's office," Tiner told Mic. Mic's eyes widened. Mackenzie. Sarah Mackenzie.

"What is..... what is Major Mackenzie's first name?" Mic asked trying to sound purely curious.

'Funny question,' thought Tiner. 'Oh well.' "Sarah," he replied finally. "But everyone calls her Mac."

Mic suddenly felt weak. He was being moved to the same office as Sarah had been transferred to only a few months ago! He wondered if she still thought about him. Goodness he certainly thought about her! Maybe he'd ask her out again. He could get her to say yes.

"Oh!" A surprised yell brought Mic back to earth. He had run straight into Ensign Sims.

"Oh my, so sorry Ensign!" Mic exclaimed.

"It's okay......." Harriet did not yet know his name.

"Brumby," Mic told her. "Commander Mic Brumby."

"Commander Burnby," Harriet repeated. "Nice to meet you. I'm Harriet Sims."

"Well it's nice to meet you too Ensign Sims. I'll look forward to working with you," Mic replied, ignoring her mispronunciation of his name.

"You too."

Tiner and Mic continued their tour of the JAG office in Falls Church Virginia, but something much more interesting was going on in a hospital thirty minutes away.

Mac's room

Harm sat in a chair beside Mac's bed. He was still holding her hand. Harm watched her carefully, waiting for any movement. Suddenly Mac's eyes fluttered open.

"Hello Sarah," Harm said pleasantly.

"Hello Harm," she replied.

"How are you?" Harm asked.

"Been better," Mac muttered.

"I've been waiting here for you to wake up. I never left," Harm told her.

"Well I'm awake, and I'm hungry!" she exclaimed.

"I bet you are," Harm commented. "Want me to go get you a burger or something?"

"I'd love that!" Mac smiled.

"I'll be right back," Harm assured her as he left the room.

"I'll look forward to that," she said quietly. Harm was being so nice. He was taking care of her. He loved her. She loved him. But she loved him more than just a friend. She wondered... he had told her he loved her... but did he love her the way that she loved him? Oh God... if he didn't... She hoped it was the sedatives taking their toll on her mind, but he seemed to be acting strange... she didn't know what it was, but something was wrong. Just then, a doctor walked in, interrupting her thoughts.

"How are you feeling Ms. Mackenzie?" the doctor asked.

"Physically I'm fine, but emotionally I'm a wreck," she responded. "Nothing you need to worry about."

The doctor checked Mac's leg and then said "It looks like it'll be okay in no time!"

"Wonderful," Mac was relieved. The doctor scribbled something on his clipboard and left.

Not five minutes later, Harm came in with a burger and fries for her, and a salad for him.

"Thank you so much Harm," Mac grinned.

"No problem," Harm replied. "Guess who I ran into in the waiting room!"

"Who?" Mac asked.

"Bud and a new JAG officer, Lieutenant Maria Smyth. They say they want to ask us some questions," Harm told her.

"Ahh... found the poachers I guess. At least it wasn't us," Mac decided.

"Yeah... but I think we'll be tried for murder!" Harm grimaced.

"MURDER?! We were defending ourselves!" Mac nearly shouted.

"Mac, think," Harm commanded. "All they've seen is evidence that we were there, and three dead men. They don't know anything! We'll prove ourselves not guilty."

"They could... they could take us to court!" Mac protested.

"Mac, don't be worried. I'll get us out of this, I promise. And remember, I don't break promises," Harm told her finishing his salad and turning towards the door.

"Where are you going?" Mac asked urgently.

"I'm going to get Bud and Maria," Harm opened the door. He found himself face to face with none other than Bud and Maria.

"I was just coming to get you," Harm commented.

"We ran into the doctor and he told us that she was awake," Bud explained.

"Oh okay," Harm said. "Come on in." Harm sat in his chair next to Mac's bed while Bud and Maria tried to make themselves comfortable in hard plastic ones.

"Commander, Major, where were you these past couple days?" Bud questioned. "You clearly were not in office."

"We were lost in the Appalachian mountains south of the airport where I keep Sarah trying to get away from some murderous poachers," Harm answered promptly. Seeing the confused look on Bud's face, he added "Sarah is my plane. Named after my grandmother."

'So that's who she was' Mac thought.

"Did you... kill the poachers?" Bud seemed uncertain.

"We did," Harm replied. "In self defense. If you choose to take us to court, that is how we will plea."

"Yes sir. You will be provided with an attorney. I'm afraid I'll have to call the police immediately."

"No!" Harm shouted without thinking. "I won't leave Sarah!"

'His plane?' Mac thought. 'No stupid, you!' said her brain. Damned sedatives.

"Sir, with all due respect, you..."

"Let them come," Harm was calm again. "Sarah, I'll see you soon." He leaned over and kissed Mac. At this point, Mac was sure that he loved her exactly the same way she loved him. The two of them were obviously completely oblivious to Bud and Maria's calling the police, and even their presence in the room. Suddenly, the two were interrupted by the entry of the police. Harm allowed himself to be led away.

"I love you Sarah," he called back.

"I love you too, Harm," she called to him.

'Great, just great!' thought AJ. Now his two best lawyers had been accused of murder! This whole JAG office was going to turn into a huge joke!

At that moment, AJ heard a knock on the door. "Enter!" he called. Bud and Maria slid into the room.

"Sir, Commander Rabb is pleading self defense to the police right now. He needs a lawyer," Bud told AJ.

"You're right, I'm on it," AJ grumbled. "Bud, come with me, you're co-council.

"Yes sir!" Bud followed AJ. On the way to the parking lot, Bud and AJ ran into Mic, who was in a deep conversation with Singer.

"Brumby! Singer!" AJ barked.

"Sir!" they stood at attention.

"Commander Rabb and Major Mackenzie have been accused of murder. I'm assigning you two to prosecute."

"Yes Sir!" they replied in unison.

'There go my chances with Sarah,' Mic thought. He sighed and watched AJ leave, Bud right behind him.

Some kind of military jail
Questioning room

"Commander Rabb! What on earth have you gotten yourself into this time?!" AJ demanded.

"I don't know sir," Harm replied.

"Commander, they're taking you to court. Commander Brumby's charging you with three counts of murder," AJ told him.

"The Major too," Bud added. "The uh... Admiral and I are defending both of you."

"Tell us your story," AJ said.

"Sir, I'd really like to wait for Ma... I mean Major Mackenzie to be present when I told you...... she may remember some things that I don't," Harm protested.

"Did I hear my name?" asked a voice at the door. It was Mac, sitting in a wheelchair. "They released me from the hospital, but they condemned me to this awful chair."

"Mac!" Harm exclaimed. "How are you feeling?"

"Better," she replied.

"God..... I'm so glad you're here," Harm whispered into Mac's ear. She smiled.

"Now.... would you two mind explaining yourselves?" AJ interjected. "I think your attorneys ought to know what happened!"

"Attorneys?" Mac asked.

"Major, you and the Commander are being charged with three counts of murder. We're representing you," Bud explained.

"Murder?! Since when is it MURDER to defend yourself?!" Mac practically shouted.

"Mac, don't worry," Harm whispered. "I told you I'd get us out of this."

For hours Harm and Mac sat, telling every detail of their story to AJ and Bud. When they finished, AJ and Bud looked relatively happy. Their defense was foolproof! AJ and Bud stood. "We'll see you soon," said Bud.

"Behave yourselves," AJ added. As AJ and Bud left, four security guards came in and led Harm down a hallway, one man pushing Mac's wheelchair. As they walked, an older man approached them.

"Sir, we need two cells," one of the guards said to him.

"There is only one available cell," the man replied. "They will have to share." Harm and Mac looked at each other. Each wore a look that said 'Thank God we're not being separated'. Harm looked around and saw that all of the guards were staring at him strangely.

"What is it?" he asked.

"Can we trust you with her?" asked one gruffly.

"You can," Mac assured them. "That man just saved my life who knows how many times." Harm grinned at Mac. He knew they would believe her. At that remark, the guards took them to a cell at the very end of the hallway. The guards let Harm go into the cell, and then handed Mac off to him. He pushed her to what they assumed to be a bunk bed. The cell was locked, and all but one of the guards walked away.

"I call top bunk!" Harm joked.

"Ha ha. No argument here!" Mac rolled her eyes and looked down at her current state.

"I'll owe you,” Harm offered. He sat down on the bottom bed and pulled Mac's chair close to him.

For the rest of the afternoon, they played "I spy" and "Rock, paper, scissors". (LOLOL!)

There was a knock at the door. "Come in!" called Mic Brumby.

"Mic!" exclaimed a cheerful voice at the door. It was Lt. Singer.

"Good afternoon Lauren," Mic greeted.

"So, sir, what are we charging them with?" Singer asked.

"Three counts of murder," Mic replied. "But they're pleading self defense. It'll be hard to prove that wasn't the case."

"No dereliction of duty?" Singer asked disappointedly.

"We couldn't pull it of Lauren. Murder's enough."

"What's wrong?" asked Singer noticing the less-than-enthusiastic tone in his voice."

"Um..." Mic did not want to tell her the real reason that he was unenthusiastic to prosecute Sarah Mackenzie... He didn't mind prosecuting Harmon Rabb though. That.... that.... that... jerk was probably the real reason his Sarah left him! But he couldn't tell Singer that he had been personally involved with one of the defendants. It surely wasn't allowed!

"Mic?" Singer questioned.

"Uh... sorry Lauren, I was thinking about the case... I'm not enthusiastic because... well I..."

"Spit it out!" Singer interjected.

"I just think it's going to be hard to prove them guilty," he lied. 'Well actually,' he thought. 'It really was only a half lie. It was going to be hard to prove them guilty, but that had not been what he was thinking.

"We'll get 'em Commander," Singer assured him. "I've been waiting for my chance to do this."

"Prosecute Sarah?” Mic asked without thinking.

"Sarah... oh.... Mackenzie. Yeah, her and Rabb annoy the heck outta me those two," Singer told him. "We'll get em in court. No matter what it takes, we'll get em."

'Even if it involves getting you removed from the case for personal involvement.....' Singer thought to herself. Boy she was getting good at this!

A prison
Harm and Mac's cell

"Harm, this is getting old," Mac said, making a scissors shape with her hand.

"You're right," he replied making a rock fist with his own hand and pushing Mac's "scissors" away with it.

"Mac... we really... um... I well I think we should talk," Harm stuttered.

"I do too," Mac replied.

"Mac... I feel that... well... I think we have... more than a friendship," Harm admitted.

"Oh Harm, I think so too," Mac agreed. "I've been in love with you since the very day I met you in the Rose Garden."

"Mac, when I was told I was getting a new partner, I didn't know what to expect. When I met you, I still didn't know what to expect. All I knew was that I loved you. The only thing that kept me from saying anything was that I didn't know if you loved me," Harm confessed.

"Oh God, Harm I do love you... I love you more than I've ever loved anyone," Mac declared. They leaned towards each other and their lips met in an electrifying kiss. Emotions flowed through the room, love, hope, and joy.

As they parted, both knew that they had found true love at last. Mac rested her head against Harm's chest. He pulled her body closer and held her in his arms.

"You know it's probably against prison regs to kiss your cell mate," Harm whispered.

"So what?" Mac whispered back.

Someone rapped on the cell bars. "Dinner!" called the guard. He opened the cell door a bit and slipped in a cart carrying what the prison called food into the room. The guard handed them each a plate and wheeled his cart out of the cell. "I'll be back for the plates in an hour," he called.

Harm and Mac both looked at their plates. On each was a piece of chicken, some mashed potatoes, corn, and a roll. They both looked up at the same time. "Disgusting," they said in unison. Harm flopped his chicken onto Mac's plate and in return she gave him her mashed potatoes. They laughed, thinking about how well they read each other's minds. Harm picked up the little baggie of eating utensils. It held a single spork. (OH yes, sporks rule!)

"How do they expect me to butter my roll?" Harm wondered.

"Dip it," Mac suggested, laughing. Harm looked at her oddly. Mac shrugged and dipped her own roll in the package of butter. "It's food," she muffed out, her mouth full of bread. "And I'm starving."

"You're always starving," Harm laughed beginning to eat his own food.

Mac smiled and continued eating the so-called food.

Suddenly there was a yell from somewhere else in the hallway. "Shut up ya love birds, we're trying to eat here!" yelled a rough sounding voice.

Harm and Mac looked at each other, both silently laughing.

Mic Brumby was talking to himself. Singer could hear him. She leaned closer to his office door trying to hear. It was late. No one would notice. Ahh, now she could hear him.

"Sarah.... I love Sarah..."

Singer clicked the recorder button on her pocket tape recorder.

"How am I going to do this... I don't want to win the case.... Sarah...... I can't put my Sarah in jail..... she has to be innocent.... I won't want to win.... and then I'll be in trouble... but if someone finds out... singer..... I'll be reprimanded for personal involvement..... what should I do.... oh god Sarah why the hell did you have to leave me..."

Singer had what she needed. Which was good, because the second she started to walk away, Mic looked up.
