Standing a small space behind the Silent Paw, Angie was seized with the sudden compulsion to stop him, to warn the masked female in the cave and perhaps prepare her for what was certain to be a revelation. The words were on her lips: she doesn't know, you can't just show up like this, you'll shatter her. But she hesitated, balking at such an unnatural thought, and then there was movement beneath the shadow of the rock.
Gwenneth woke slowly, somehow feeling more weary for her little space of rest. Her knees trembled slightly as she stood and she steadied them with an effort, blinking rapidly to clear her eyes as she tottered to the front of the cave. Peering into the grey pre-dawn light, her gaze was immediately attracted by a large blot of bright blue against the natural greys and greens of the pass. And when her green-gold eyes met with the violet gaze of this creature, time stood still.
Her mind was completely blank, without a single thought to fill the echoing space, and each heartbeat was a slow, painful eternity in her small breast. For there, sitting on the path as nonchalantly as could be, was a cat - but not any kind of cat she'd seen before apart from her own reflection. It was long of limb, built lightly and gracefully, with a more delicate head structure and larger ears than any other cat of this size; the eyes were large and luminous in the pale light, the tail long and full, the large paws dextrous.
::This is the Silent Paw liren you're so bent on rescuing,:: Angie spoke into the silence, allowing all those gathered to hear (including the half-asleep Alexis). ::I warned you - you do not understand. She is masked, to protect the boy.::
Silent Paw? Gwenneth's mind was suddenly full, spinning wildly with confusion and uncertainty that swirled into a befuddling haze. She sank to the ground, her tiny body pressing close against the dirt and stone. ::You,:: she whispered, and the words seemed wrenched from her. ::You're just like me.::
Jeffrey drew a deeper breath, shifting his position slightly and rising slowly to wakefulness. Upon opening his eyes in the dark solitude of the cave, the first thing he noticed was that Gwennie was no longer with him; the second thing, however, blotted this from his mind - the fact that Alexis was curled just beside him, her hair spilling over his arm and gleaming in the dim light. He closed his eyes again, breathing in her warm, comforting scent, and was feeling quite drowsy again when a small noise outside the cave alerted him.
"Gwennie?" he called softly, careful not to disturb Alexis. "Are you there?"
