Jeffrey stared up at Alexis from where he had landed in the dirt. The pale g.irl stood imperiously over him, eyes flashing like whitewater in the moonlight, nearly trembling with rage. And Jeff wanted to be angry. With all of his heart, he longed to be filled with rage, to stand before her and turn her accusations against her. He wanted to yell at her, to intimidate and condemn with his words.
But curiously, he found himself unable to summon any emotion of the sort. In place of anger, from the pit of his stomach welled up a black pool of misery that spread throughout his body until he could almost feel it tingling in his fingers and toes. He felt as though he had made a giant depression in the earth, and with every word from Alexis's mouth he sunk deeper, and all the tears born of sadness and suffering flowed from all corners of the world to drain into him. It was a sadness beyond anything he'd ever felt, far worse than anything that had sent him to sob bitter tears into his pillow while Gwennie sat by in silent vigil. The entire world had rejected him; even Gwen had not followed him, but stayed in the camp with the demons, and he was all alone. The frigid, iron grip of misery clutched his heart painfully tight. He opened his mouth to speak, not knowing what he would say, but no sound came from his contracted throat.
Gwenneth suddenly doubled over, her expression that of intense pain.
::He suffers,:: she whimpered, her mindlink so weak that it reached only Rio and Monet, standing on either side of her. ::Oh, my poor boy...::
Jeff sighed, an action that said far more than the shouting he'd wanted to do. Slowly, carefully, he rose to his feet, staggering momentarily and steadying himself against a tree. He looked at Alexis for a long moment, studying her intently. She began to look uncomfortable, and with a blank countenance and emotionless voice Jeff said,
"Don't worry. I just want to remember everything about you. You see, you're one of the most interesting people I've ever met, but I'm afraid we'll never be seeing each other again."
Gwenneth looked up, blinking hard, apprehensive.
"I may be silly and stubborn," Jeff continued coldly, "but from a lifetime of experience I know when I'm not wanted. Go back to the camp, Alexis."
His freckled face was very solemn. As he looked at her one final time, his grey eyes for an instant reflected the black well of misery within him; but then they hardened, hard as stones, and Jeffrey Gage Ryan turned on his heel and walked away. With every step his sadness grew, until all thought fled his mind. He had only gotten about fifteen steps when he collapsed in a heap, striking his head against a tree root.
With a soft cry of anguish Gwenneth bounded past Alexis, who seemed temporarily frozen in place, and dashed to the side of her boy.
