Gwenneveire looked over her shoulder. Her boy was blissfully unconscious, cradled in Alexis's arms. The g.irls were speaking hesitantly, and Gwenneth was greatly encouraged to see Angelina smile tentatively. The tiny liren nodded to herself, and smiled briefly up at Monet and Rio before approaching the group again.
::Alexis, there is an unfinished and abandoned bear den twenty yards straight ahead of you,:: she said. ::Careful, or you'll tumble straight down the hill it's in. Allow me to assist you with the boy...::
She crouched, and her small form seemed to melt away into the ground. An instant later she rose to her feet again as her full-sized liren self, taller than the sitting g.irls. Angie, her eyes enormous, backed up quickly to put her back against a tree. Gwenneth laughed gently.
::Fear not, child. Things are not always as they seem. I am sorry to have deceived you, but think-- the boy has been deceived all of his life. You must help him to accept who he truly is.::
Angie nodded quickly, not budging. Gwenneth smiled and moved forward to lay down beside her boy.
::If you would, g.irls, just roll him onto my back...::
Warily, never removing her eyes from Gwen, Angie crept forward and with the help of Alexis managed to heave Jeff onto his stomach on the back of his liren. Gwenneth stood carefully, and Angie backed away again, scrambling to her feet and blinking in astonishment at the powerful limbs. She stayed close behind Alexis as they followed Gwenneth through the brush. In a moment they were walking downhill, and at the bottom of the slope the liren turned left, walked a few long paces, and stopped. In the side of the hill, peeking through the grass and leaves, a ragged hole, about four feet in diameter, could be seen. Gwenneth bent her front legs carefully and Jeff slid to the ground in a heap. The liren smiled warmly at him and then turned to Alexis and Angelina. Angie, having apparently overcome her fear, stood squarely beside Alexis with folded arms.
::It's not very clean, admittedly,:: Gwenneth said with a small smile, ::but it should keep you dry and it won't collapse. Children...:: She shook her head, at a loss for words, but the kind and loving tone of her voice conveyed all that needed to be said. She blinked her enormous golden eyes and in a single leap disappeared in the shadows at the top of the hill.
Angie stared after her for a moment. "Well, that was weird," she commented. She nudged Jeff's unconscious body with a toe. "So, we've gotta drag him in there now, I guess." She grinned, glancing sideways at Alexis. "Hope you don't mind getting dirty."
