Jeffrey's limp body lolled slightly with each stride of the horse, but Gabriel kept him steady. He was lost in the darkness of unconscious despair, held there more by force of will than by injury. He did not want to face the terrifying new reality of his kidnapping, of Alexis's alliegance with the Cheysuli-demons. And so he held himself beyond the reach of reality, in the darkness of his mind, unthinking and subconsciously dreading the moment of his waking.
A small figure crouched at the base of a tree, well hidden in the twilight shadows of the brush. Her eyes moved silently as the black horse approached, her heart pounding. Cheysuli! Kalea was somehow involved in this strange situation, and Angie was jealous. Why should she be left out of all the excitement? She could come along for the ride if she felt like it! What was Kalea being so mean for, anyway? Angelina scowled silently and stubbornly, but her indignation melted away when the black horse was reined to a halt hot twenty yards from her. At its heels trotted a midnight-black wolf, barely visible against the shadows, and atop the horse sat the kidnapped, unconscious human boy and a the pale, beautiful human on either side of the enormous, hulking Cheysuli warrior. Both the warrior and the wolf were staring straight at her hiding place. Angie's eyes widened in unspeakable horror, and she shrank silently against the tree trunk. But nothing happened-- the warrior chuckled quietly ((it seemed menacing to Angie)) and spurred the horse onward. The wolf followed placidly, and neither it nor the warrior looked back to see if Angie followed. She swallowed hard, pressing both hands to her chest to quell her hammering heart. After a moment, though, she squared her shoulders insistently and crept off after the horse, taking care to keep absolutely silent. She reasoned that they probably knew she was following, but if they didn't attack now, why would they attack later? Besides, she thought to herself, nothing ventured, nothing gained. Why let Kalea have all the fun? She'll catch up with us, I'm sure. I don't know how she got involved in this thing, but I won't be left out.
