Festivals are amazing and I highly recommend going to one if you have never been. The creativity that people put into their camping sites is incrediable! I have never been to purely a bluegrass festival, but after reading Gardner's article and hearing about Bonnie and Bridget's experience I am inspired to go to one. I am curious to know how non-musicians experience of bluegrass festivals would differ from the experience of musicians. The other bluegrass band mentioned that the majority of audience members probably play bluegrass themselves. Would not having any prior knowledge of bluegrass musical structure alter one's experience of listening/watching bluegrass? I have been to a few bluegrass shows and have always enjoyed the music, but I have no concept of the theory and structure of bluegrass. I wonder how accepting the bluegrass community is to new comers? Gardner made it seem like that the community could be very welcoming to new comers, but what kind of musical background do you have to have to be accepted? Is their such a thing as an authentic fan?
