WOW! Someone else who agrees with me that Tokyo Pop's translations are crappy! ^______^ Hello my sister!
I have had the (dis)pleasure of being with Tokyo Pop from the very beginning. WAY back when they were still Mixx Entertainment and Mixxzine (I bought the second issue). I used to read it for the Sailor Moon translations, and I gotta say that I've been disappointed with their translations from the time that I really learned that fans themselves can and may always do better translations than professional companies. This was about four years ago, and I really started hating them then. I haven't bought any of their products since I cancelled my subscription.
They're quite unkind to their fanbase as well. I sent them a letter once, and was actually SNUBBED (this was not an automated message, this was a genuine person) in an email response from them in reply. I was stunned, and wondering about their lack of PR.
I'll admit, they've been getting a little better very recently with leaving suffixes in their translations of CLAMP School Detectives and things, but they still aren't up to what I would consider even a good translation. But I will never, NEVER forgive them for what they did to Wish.
Tokyo Pop works for some people. I know that. There are people who like them. My friends buy their graphic novels. I don't find a problem with that. So I hope no one thinks I'm bashing their fans. Just them in general. ^__^ I understand that people have trouble getting their hands on translations, or can't read Japanese. That's just the way the world is. HOWEVER! If you really want to read HIGH-QUALITY translations, ALWAYS go to the fans first. Don't rely on Tokyo Pop for high-quality translations. One thing I do wish about fans though is that they wouldn't look to just Tokyo Pop to be their savior and only hope for reading translations. There are other companies out there, and I would encourage fans to go to some of the newer translation/publishing divisions that are entering the market. And I wish that fans would quit petitioning for things. Like I said, I don't think Tokyo Pop appreciates their fans.
And as for Viz... they've done their fair share of futzing up too. Need I reference Seishirou's spell-casting? ^__^ What was it again? Dark Sky, Dark Wings, Dark Clouds, Dark Things DESTROY or something like that! *LOL* I can't believe they translated the kuji (nine spell-casting syllables of Taoist origin often used in anime and manga) like that! And they also, for some reason, refuse to translate Seishirou's speech correctly. He speaks EXTREMELY POLITELY, and something about the way they translate his speech comes off to ME as highly UNcultured, which is exactly opposite of what he should be.
*sigh* Actually, what is the real shame is that fans have to depend on these companies at all to get their translations. They think that just because they're some of the few publishers that bring over manga that they can take advantage of fans and a. charge too much and b. do poor quality translating. I'm looking forward to the fact that more competitors are entering the market (I believe Random House just developed a translation division, as have other publishing houses, I think). It's already beginning to drive down some of the prices of graphic novels as they compete to hang on to their consumers. Hopefully, this will eventually up the quality of translations as well.
