Authority? I think this may not be exactly what you had in mind. Quite clearly the companies brining over the anime DO have the _authority_, because the creators signed contracts giving rights to the publishing house which turned around and handed the domestic company rights.

And (and this is getting somewhat afield) what about things like Robotech and (god it hurts to put these in the same sentence) Cardcaptors, where they change things around completely?
