When precisely did it become fashionable to cancel every original show on television?

It seems to me that Buffy ended because Sarah Michelle Gellar stuck a stake in it. Being incredibly reasonable I can assume that the network passed on renewing Angel because it tied in with Buffy [I realize there is a flaw here but pretty obviously the networks didn't]. Now it seems like the thing to do is cancel good shows for crap rip offs of other countries ideas for reality television or crime television shows that are all spin offs of one another. I wonder what would happen if Law & Order and Idol were cancelled - there would be nothing on television

Looking around Kung Fu notices the Box looking a little bit derelict and decides to clean up. After rummaging around for a while he comes out with a book entitled "Cleaning Spells". He opens the book and presses the button marked press here to clean [don'tcha just love magic?]

Whhooof!

A mini tornado whirls around the Magic Box tidying everything in it's path. After a few seconds all that remains to do is replace Her Flaminess' treats and reposition Her banners to cover the Goat embedded into the wall above the counter

He was like that when I got here Honest.
