I disagree.

Where did you get the info about what Yogananda and Ramana said to each other, and who is its author? Somehow, regardless of what you said how Ramana (supposedly) spoke to Yogananda as an 'elder', I think he wasnt necessarily more spiritually advanced, perhaps even less so. Thats just my opinion however.

No one is saying Yogananda was above Lahiri Mahashaya in attainment. Where is it written that Lahiri Mahashaya was not an avatar and who made such a claim?
Yogananda referred to Lahiri Mahashaya as Yogavatar, implying he was an avatar.
Rajarsi also called PY a Premavatar, implying the same thing.

I believe Yogananda did admit to being an avatar because I believe in Br. Anandamoy's words when he witnessed it.

I dont believe he would have been uncomfortable with such a claim because there was no ego in him for it to cling to.

Youre right, this is all useless speculation which you cannot take it on face value. Remain open-minded about it at least, and dont decide one way or another when you have no possible way of knowing it.

It only appears as a hierarchy if you look at it that way; as some sort of competition. Technically it is just a way of discerning between a fully liberated soul who has been liberated fully in that life-time (Siddha) and one who has been born after having already been fully-liberated ina previous life (Avatara).
