Total agreement: Best. Episode. Ever.

The writer appeared to be a new guy whose name I didn't recognize. Anyway, the man knows what he's doing. The pacing was perfect, intense and riveting from start to finish, no slack moments. My only real complaint was that we had to interrupt it so the TV station could pay their bills.

Good mix of action, drama, a few funny moments, and great character development. I like and respect Mal more and more each week. He is a flawed character--neither the bravest, nor the brightest, nor the most ethical, nor the best people person, nor the best fighter. In my view he compensates for all of that with his loyalty. He is almost always the first into harm's way and the last out, and he stands doggedly by his crew members. He was probably a good sergeant and I think I can see why he inspired the loyalty of those around him.

I also have to agree with Scroll. I was honestly afraid they were going to kill off Jayne--particularly considering how Joss likes to kill of a character that's in the opening credits at some point during the first season. I am, of course, glad he didn't do that here. Despite Jayne's greedy, power hungry, amoral opportunism he has a role to play.

I may have something more substantive to say later, but right now I'm in rave mode.
