Subject: And this is why...
In reply to: Anonymous 's message, "Drake found another pro dancer" on 08:54:19 12/07/24 Sat

And this is why the Adult category needs to go. First off, just because a dancer happens to be a pro ballerina, doesn't automatically mean that she will be phenomenal at irish dance. I have seen amazing ballet dancers that struggle with the foot placement and crossing with irish dance. Just because you have a dance background does not mean that you automatically have to dance in a more difficult category because you might be better than other dancers. By that logic, we’d have background checks and if you made karate black belt or danced open in ballroom you can’t dance in the adult category. Don’t pick on her because she has a background that might give her an advantage. That’s life, suck it up. If she didn’t dance as a kid, she is fine where she is.

BUT this does highlight why the current adult categories need to go. With the kids age groups, skilled dancers LEVEL UP in their own AGE CATEGORY. Let’s stick with this ballet dancer for the example. She’s probably in her early twenties. Let’s say she has an age group…U25. She makes her way up to prelim, probably quickly. Then she wins her two firsts and gets into Open. All the way throughout her competitive irish career, she is dancing in an appropriate skill level in her correct age group, and leveling up when she wins. No one would wish her ill, she would be celebrated. Because at Os, she’d be dancing her skill level and age group. At Nans, she’d be dancing her skill level and age group

ON THE FLIP SIDE, let’s not forget the dancers that were forced into Advanced Adults who won their placements decades ago. The current system punishes them because they are not in a skill appropriate category. Those dancers would, again, should be in an age appropriate and skill appropriate category. Maybe they are in prelim and qualify for nationals, maybe they aren’t there yet. If they end up on stage with a champ dancer at Os, it's just like any other age category…but at least they know they’ll end up with someone in their 30s or 40s, if they are also in their 30s or 40s…and not some 22 year old that did Worlds five years ago while they are 39 and haven’t touched a hard shoe in ten years.

Extend the age groups. Everyone plays by the same rules, no division between the kids and adults. It is the only way to have a fair competition. Anything other than that system is a waste of time.
