In reply to: Hilarious 's message, "So foot circles are out, head wiggles are in? The new trend in choreo?" on 01:27:09 12/09/24 Mon

Years ago it would have been considered 'unacceptable' to over extend clicks above head, but is now expected! Holding jumps in mid air for as long as possible, in an athletic manner was considered 'American' and 'not irish dancing'. Jumping on the spot with legs wide out in splits position, like a russian dancer would have been called 'ridiculous', lifting the back foot to half way up the back would have been classed 'over the top'.

It is all now normal.

Like everything, dancing has evolved. Teachers / dancers push boundaries a little bit each time to better the competition and over the years the style evolves so much it becomes very different from the tradition.

Originally clicks were taught to kick up to waist height, never mind above the head. Cuts were barely lifted to the knee, never mind hip. Feet were placed straight, not over turned out, and cross over was never like it is today.

I do believe we have reached a time where there's nothing more to exaggerate. To be one better than the rest, dancers are pushing their bodies to the absolute limit in what is humanly capable. It's now impossible to click any higher or turn out any more, which is why I believe there's a noticeable change happening with facial performance.
Reels have become sassier, slip jigs have become sexier. Pouting is a thing, heads turning slower to exaggerate style. Dancers are influence by other dancers doing it, and then becomes the norm. Whether we like it or not, irish dancing has evolved, and nothing will stop that.

Replies:

  • The turnout and crossover now needed is so extreme it forces dancers to literally turn sideways. -- And keep the head forward, 10:18:03 12/09/24 Mon
