It was heartbreaking to watch certain parents—so wrapped up in the sport that they lost all perspective—pressure injured kids back onto the stage. I’ve seen teachers recommend removing protective casts from broken feet, and parents ask if they could layer pain meds just to keep a child competing. That’s not ambition. That’s harm.

At some point, a lot of people are going to look back on those decisions with shame and regret, because no medal is worth a child’s physical or emotional well-being.
