Nick didn't know if visiting Teddy was such a good idea. As hurt as Nick had been by Teddy's accusations, he would never knowingly do anything to harm him. When Teddy had slumped to the floor, Nick felt his own heart stop, too.

Ever since he'd lost his parents, Teddy had been there for Nick. After all, it was Teddy who had championed a romance between Nick and Randy, even before they had known or wanted it themselves.

It wasn't Teddy's fault that Randy had lied to him. It wasn't Teddy's fault he thought Nick had abandoned her. All Teddy knew was his precious daughter was pregnant and fighting for her life.

As for Nick, the vision in his head, of Randy, alone, in that car, as it careened over Heartbreak Hill was impossible to shake. Even if Randy and the baby made a full recovery, Nick doubted whether that image could ever be erased from his mind.

Well, Randy would never be alone again, he vowed. He would be there for her every day - in every way - from now on. Making sure that Teddy was okay was just the first step on Nick's journey toward being the man Randy wanted, and needed, and loved.

"Hey, Ted…." Nick whispered, not wanting to wake Teddy if he were asleep.

Teddy was still groggy from the medication but he knew what he wanted to ask. "Miranda, is she…?"

"She's puttin' up a great fight," Nick smiled, rushing to Teddy's bedside to reassure him. "You know how Randy likes t'prove everybody wrong."

Teddy nodded weakly, a hopeful grin crossing his face. "The baby, too?"

"The baby, too…" Nick comforted, glad to see the EKG of Teddy's heartbeat holding steady.

"Teddy, I…" Nick wasn't sure if he should continue, but he took a chance. "I just wanted you to know that Randy never told me about Nicole. I would've been there if…"

Teddy had been about to brush off Nick's excuses with a wave of his hand when Nick's words began to sink in. "She never told you?" he repeated, incredulous.

Nick shook his head sadly. "I only found out a few hours before karaoke night at the Pear."

"Eight years…" Teddy mumbled, astonished. "And she never told you?"

"I can't say I wasn't angry…" Nick apologized. "I needed some time, Ted… Just needed a little time for it all to sink in… We were on our way back to each other… Tonight was supposed to be our new beginning…" Nick's voice grew sadder with each sentence.

"And this baby?" Teddy was fighting the sedatives now with all his might. Finally, after all these years, someone was telling him the truth. Unfortunately, that someone wasn't his own daughter.

"I found out from the doctor…" Nick explained. "Maybe Randy wasn't ready…"

Teddy shook his head, ashamed for all the conclusions he'd jumped to, ashamed for all the lies Randy had told. Teddy had prided himself in being there for Randy after her mother died but, apparently, his little girl didn't trust him any more than she'd trusted Nick.

"I owe you an apology…" Teddy whispered with regret.

"No…no, you don't…" Nick shook his head vehemently. "I should've been there…"

"Life's too short for blame, Nick…." Teddy struggled to finish as he felt himself succumbing to a much-needed sleep. "You've got a family upstairs…"

"We've got a family upstairs…" he amended, reaching out for Nick's hand. "Go take care of 'em for me, will ya?" Teddy smiled, as his eyelids closed at last.

"I promise, Ted…" Nick vowed, making sure Teddy's heartbeat was still strong before he left. "I promise…"
