"Is it all right if I…?" Rob took two steps inside Randy's room and stopped. Sully was just removing his stethoscope from Randy's heart and Rob wondered if maybe he should have waited.

"I'm just finishing…" Sully smiled, adjusting her gown and gesturing for Rob to come closer.

Rob stood over Randy's bed and, for a moment, he blanched. The sight of her, broken and battered, made him physically ill and Rob fought to keep his stomach from churning. Randy looked so small, so helpless. This just couldn't be happening. None of it made any sense.

In Rob's mind all he could see was Randy as she'd been earlier that evening: positively radiant, twirling happily in her little black dress, so optimistic and anxious to reunite with Nick. More and more, the room seemed to be twirling along with Rob's vision of Randy.

Twirling and twirling and twirling…

Rob wobbled slightly and Sully grabbed his arm, leading him to sit in the chair beside Randy's bed.

"Easy…" Sully cautioned.

"Fine…I'm fine…" Furious with himself, Rob shook his head and drew a deep breath. "How's she doin'?"

"Heartbeat's a little stronger…that's good…" Sully found hope in each tiny improvement.

"I'm so sorry, Rand…" Rob whispered softly, his lip quivering as he reached out tentatively to brush her hand with his fingertips. If he ever saw that damned Camaro again, he'd rip every inch of steel apart with his bare hands.

Hearing Rob's voice choke, Sully offered a bit of advice. "Sorry's not going to help her get well…"

"What will?" Rob sniffed, refusing to allow any tears. "Specialists?"

The thought occurred to Rob that perhaps all his money and fame might actually be good for something. He hadn't been able to help his mother…but, maybe, just maybe, he could help Miranda.

"Whatever it costs, I'll pay," he insisted. "Whatever she needs, you just tell me…"

Sully smiled at the warmth and love that seemed to surround Randy and her baby from all corners of Studs. If only that alone were enough…

The crackle of static from the radio interrupted Sully's reverie. "Ooops…"

"What's wrong?" Rob asked, concerned.

"Guess the easy listening station out of Laredo's finished for the night," Sully frowned. "Music seemed to be helping her…"

Rob smiled just a bit. "If it's music she needs, I have been known to carry a tune…"

Sully considered Rob's offer carefully. "Uh…I'm not sure anything from Spit would be 'appropriate'..." he critiqued with a smirk.

Since Sully was Randy's doctor, Rob graciously refrained from punching him. Still, with five Grammys, four number one Billboard singles, and seven albums gone platinum, Rob failed to see how his music could be so woefully misunderstood!

With a mock scowl on his face, Rob raised an inquisitive eyebrow. "Something more Retro, Doc? Is that what you're saying?" he asked. "Something from the good old days, perhaps?"

Guiltily, Sully retreated toward the door. Rob Lawson was a lot bigger than he was, plus he could afford plastic surgery to fix whatever minor blow Sully might be able to inflict - that is, if the Hippocratic Oath didn't frown on willful bodily harm…

"Sounds perfect…" Sully winked, certain he was leaving Randy in good hands.

Rob's bravado faded, though, as soon as he heard the door close behind Sully. Suddenly, Rob grew tentative, nervous, even. Being alone with Randy meant that she was his responsibility. True or false, Rob feared her recovery was now up to him.

"The good old days, huh, Rand…?" he sighed, letting his mind travel back to happier times.

"Boy, we sure had those…"
