From Hywelis:

- I think this house will fit the requisites you detailed in a most satisfactory way, Miss Aldrovandi. - the realtor said as she steered the car into a secondary street.

- I hope so. I really want to find a place where to move within a short time. I don't mean that the boarding house is not nice to stay at, but I do feel the need to have a place which I can really call my home, where I can settle permanently with all my things, a space larger than just a boarding room where to organize my life. - India answered.

- Yes, I know that feeling. - the other woman replied - So, here we are. It's that white detached house on our right. -

India turned to see a cubic construction, the style of which recalled those of the buildings in certain Mexican pueblos she had visited on her travels around the words. It had a nice garden in front, and a pathway paved with white gravel leading to the front door. The garden was fenced, as she had required, and the fence was partially covered with climbing roses in bloom which sent their fragrance in the air. But theirs was not the only one: there was another scent in the air which India attributed to a jasmine plant growing somewhere. She was not mistaken: as she advanced on the pathway following the realtor, she could see that one of the side walls was indeed covered with jasmine up to the a window on the first floor, which the other woman pointed out as the master bedroom window.

The realtor showed her inside, and India perceived straight away that the building was airy and full of light. On the ground floor there was a kitchen, a living room, a room which could be used as a library or workroom, and a general purpose spare room. They proceeded to the first floor, where the night area was located. There they toured the master bedroom, the spare bedroom with its small adjoining bath and a further room which could be put to any use the owner would choose, then the realtor opened the door to the main bathroom: it was a large room, decorated as tastefully as the rest of the house, and it had a detail which immediately captured India's attention: the bathtub was not an ordinary one, but it was embedded at floor level, and what was more, it had the shape of a seashell. It was as if someone had taken a snapshot of one of her most recondite whims and then turned it into reality. India had felt from the beginning that this house was the right one for her, unlike the other ones which she had been shown in the course of the morning, and this particular feature only enhanced that impression, yet she was careful not to appear too eager as the lady went on pointing out this and that as they returned downstairs.

- There is also a cellar, which is dry enough to be used as a pantry as well. - she said when they were back on the ground floor, and opening a door she lead India to inspect it.

The cellar was found satisfactory, and so they proceeded to the last part of the estate, the backyard, which was actually a garden in its own right, since it was covered by a well kept lawn. There was a wisteria in the garden, and it had been made to lean on a structure of poles, creating a small pavilion in a corner, and opposite it there was a small excavation.

- The previous owner used to have a little pond there. - the realtor explained - We left the excavation untouched after he sold the house. Maybe you'd care for one, too, with goldfish in it or something of that kind? -

- A pond would be very nice, but I'm afraid goldfish and the like are out of the question. I have a cat. - India replied with a smile. She remained silent for a few moments then she spoke again - Yes, this is the right one indeed. I shall take it. -
- That's wonderful. I'll begin drafting the papers first ting Monday morning and I'll let you know as soon as they are ready. It usually does not take more than a couple of days. The price is within the range which you indicated, even though it is close to the maximum limit. -

- That will be quite all right. But before I enter any formal agreement concerning it, I'll need to have an attorney check on the estate status… to make sure there are no pending mortgages on it or anything of that kind. I don't mean to question the integrity of your agency in any way, but it's not a petty everyday expenditure I am dealing with, and I do hope you understand. -

- Of course I do, madam. I thought you might want to do so, so I prepared a document containing all the relevant details. You may show it to your attorney for reference. - the realtor said, as she produced the document from her briefcase and handed it to India. - I'd say that, if everything goes according to our normal schedule, you will be given the keys of the house no later than Wednesday morning. If you have any further questions or concerns, I am at your disposal. -

- No, thanks, this will be all for now. We can go back to town. - India said, and turned to leave the house which, in a few days more, she would be able to call her home.
